1200S Ohlins rear shock - functional checks / servicing ?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by John W, Aug 27, 2013.

  1. Hi,

just back from 4 days blasting around Yorkshire over the weekend.
On the way back the bike was noticeably and fairly regularly hitting the bump stop.
We had some pretty bumpy roads, but I didn't notice this on the way up in the other direction.
Oh, and I didn't gain a couple of stone in 4 days, so its not that

I'm wondering if the shock failed to adjust itself back to 2+luggage for the ride home, after being set to rider and rider+pillion over the previous days.

    so the questions are:

    - if the bikes battery has been disconnected or the DES module has been unplugged, does it still keep the riders preferences for the settings, or are all these lost ?
(asking as the bike had its battery removed when the dealer did engine work earlier in the year. This wouldn't account for why it was different on the way back to going there, but would mean they aren't as I had previously set them for each mode)
    - is there any way to see / feel / check that the compression / rebound is being adjusted ?
(I'm looking for a way for me to check without specialist kit, to confirm it changes as intended between modes)
    - what sort of money is a damper service ?
(not sure it needs rebuilding as such, just as sanity check thyat it is working as intended)
    - any recommendations for Ohlins specialists in and around the Guildford / Horsham area ?
(I know P&H are a service centre, as are MotoWard, but motoward only deal with off road stuff last time I checked)

Any (sensible ) comments as to what I can do myself to check it over would be great.

    Cheers,
    John.

  2. 1 - I believe that the suspension settings stay in place in memory if the battery is disconnected unless they did a default reset. But not 100% sure
2 - Changing from urban to touring or sport you should hear the rear suspension motor whirring and feel the ride height changing, at least that will tell you that the motor is working. Mind you if it doesn't you get a DES error!
3 - Sorry no idea on costs
4 - Suspension people - ProTwins, Godstone or try Steve Jordan at Bookham Steve Jordan Motorcycles Suspension Centre | Steve Jordan Motorcycles

    Hope that helps

  3. thanks veetwin,

I can hear the preload motor, and will check tonight to see if it actually compresses the spring at all. Its more the damping I have a question over.
I didn't know steve jordans was an ohlins service centre. I will give them a call to see if they have the kit to test the electronic TTX stuff.

    Cheers,
    John.

  4. well I have one answer, the preload motor works but it doesn't do much

It appears the preload is hydraulic, and the adjustable spring perch looks to have failed. There is an o ring that looks to have popped out, and its all covered in dusty oil.

The bike is just outside its warranty, so what are the chances they will cover this. i think I already know the answer... :frown:

As for the comp/rebound, i think I can feel the steppers moving, but might be imagining it.

ps I posted this last night, posting again as it seems to have disappeared over night ?

  5. John, there is another thread where speedtriple? was having issues with the scu add-on and he got the shock repaired - might be worth checking that thread and seeing how he went about getting it sorted.

would also appreciate some pics to show issue ?

    bugs

  6. John did you get this fixed?

  7. Yes I did mate.
i took the shock off and took it to Steve Jordan's, who are an ohlins service centre.
i asked him to only service the preload adjuster, which he did.
there are 4 seals in it, 2 o rings and 2 large X rings. It had eaten one of the O rings, and the other was worn too.
parts aren't much but I would advise setting the motor to min preload before you take it off so they have chance to bleed it correctly.
i had to take the bike back for them to cycle the preload in order to bleed it correctly.

    hope that helps.

  8. If you don't mind saying John.....the cost?

  9. It was a while ago now so I can't remember exactly, but it was less than 100 quid.
