Little Squeak

  1. So I know I am going to get "Yes they all do that Sir" but just wondered anyway.

I did a bit of a video, the noise is after I blip the throttle, as the revs die down, I can hear a little squeak/noise for about 1/2 a second.

    1. Nothing to worry about
    2. Something worn
    3. Something coming loose

    Cheers Gaz

  2. As I was watching the video back carbs, and as you say air box did go through my mind, cheers Sev. I initially thought it sounded mechanical, like something was worn, and as the revs died down it vibrated slightly. Will look into air though.

    Cheers Gaz

  3. If it’s any assurance, mine does exactly the same if you listen hard. So Number one, nothing to worry about.

  5. Love this thread, for people who are passionate about their motorbikes:) I can't even think to tell you exactly what this is, but it's a sound we all know well*, could even be simply linked to air velocity changes. When you rev, you hear an initial sound at the beginning as well as one after you pause after the throttle has been revved. Could be as Sev said, I've had some very minor frequency belt noises that are similar over the years, seemed to be there with a new belt and improved but I never confirmed this.
    *i.e.- nothing to worry about.

  6. Cheers Chris, I just wanted make sure nobady said "I had that noise just before my engine destroyed itself".
As I said will do the air box check and I have one of those mechanics stethascopes so will have a listen to see if I can pinpoint where it is coming from.

    Cheers Gaz

  7. I'll throw in something else to consider, a goosed belt bearing? But that would generally squeak constantly

  8. ..you know for piece of mind, that's a good call and it wouldn't take long just to check, because it's struck me that although i'm certain that's a noise we've heard/ i've heard on several SS/Monsters with that engine, i can't tell how loud the "squeak" is compared to the general engine noise. This is something you would have to hear by being standing next to the bike, and if it is quite loud then worth pursuing.

  9. I'm probably wrong, but it sounds like a carb/induction/ airbox squeak. It's quite charming.

  11. I changed my belts, and replaced all the pulleys at my last service 10 months ago for peace of mind whilst I had the belts off. Still makes the noise you’re asking about, as it did before. The old Pulley bearings were faultless once I got them stripped out. I changed them anyway. I’ve always viewed the noise as non mechanical and more of a characteristic sound of the engine. Nothing to worry about.

  12. ..i'm not asking about any noise? - and with respect, you don't know what belt noise i'm talking about, and equally - i don't know which belt noise you are talking about so "nothing to worry about" not applicable in this case. :upyeah:

  15. aren't squeaks to do with belt??

my van squeaks sometimes and i just squirt some silicone over the belts and it goes away

    just an idea

  16. It’s not that sort of a squeak. As previously mentioned. Air velocity changes is a good way of describing it. Think along the lines of wastegate on a turbo charged engine.

  17. quite possible airbox related as you rev the engine then let off the throttle air flow lessens and the mouse that is nesting there lets of a little squeak as a sigh of relief that it has not been sucked into the engine avoiding impending doom
just a thought ....maybe overthinking it a little still.... just a thought
