Starting Bike After Long Lay Up

  1. Tried a search couldn't find anything:
Plan to start the Mrs' 696 after a 3-4 year lay up, changing the belts, anything else I should do, squirt anything down the spark plugs holes ?

  2. Fresh fuel and fuel filter, change oil and filter take plugs out and spin it over on the starter until oil light goes out.

  3. Cheers buddy

  4. No reason to expect a piston to be tight but before you spin it up on the starter once the plugs are out, stick it gear and see if the engine turns. Some of these US based car programmes make me smile with their 'Marvel Mystery Oil' poured in the bores to free them up. Andy

  5. ok so just out of interest if someone wanted to know what "spin it up on the starter" means what would hte answer be. asking for a friend

  6. To me,,that means press the starter button, obviously it won't fire up as the plugs are out but it'll spin the motor over, it'll move the pistons, crank, valves v etc etc. Pumping oil round and lubricating the dried out parts.

  7. Push the button (starter).

  8. As has been said earlier, with the plugs out turn it over a few times in gear using the back wheel before using the starter.
Unless it's been somewhere damp the bores should be OK as oil sticks around quite well

  16. Yep got that but fuel tank is disconnected so I'm wondering if i need to put it back on!

  17. Not essential for those first steps. Andy

  18. Dusting off the advice given since forever, you need to check whether the tyres have winter air in them and change it for summer air, also check the blinker fluid levels as over 3-4 years, the level may have dropped due to evaporation and lastly, check your power bands, as these can stretch over time, they should still be available from the dealer’s spares dept.
