What Van?

  1. I've got a Toyota hiace, been absolutely 100%reliable goes well, but... is very boring inside but it don't bother me . If I ever change it it will be a Vito.

  2. I've owned a Vito in the past, they are excellent!
    I'd recommend installing some sound deadening on all the interior metal surfaces you can get access to and insulation under the panels. It will be as quiet as a car on the road... who knows you might find you love vans. I couldn't be without one!
    Also, the newer Vito's have only limited amounts of galvanising so additional rust-proofing on the undercarriage would be a good idea.

  3. I’d go L2 if you pull the trigger on a Vito.

    Regarding side doors and glass. They’re very handy. The glass is particularly useful when you’re reversing out of a drive or similar. When you look over your shoulder you can see down the road. But not if you’re in a two seater with a bulkhead… you need a buddy to warn you of 30 ton trucks coming your way…

    transporters rock. super easy to work on. add blue sucks. if you aint bothered about ULEZ go pre 2016.
    VW Caddy. avoid 1600 diesel. 2ltr rocks.
    the traffic/vivaro 1600's are pretty damn good too.
    long wheelbase high top Doblo's are also vv good.

  7. it wasn't always that way. i'm a fiat/alfa fan boy. i'm usually the first to say when it comes to the VW group, you are paying for a reputation they had 40years ago that they no longer deserve. i still do when it comes to their cars. that includes Merc and BMW. but.... i have a couple of Audi enthusiasts in the workshop that have been drawing the punters in. not the worst. but realy not worth the money for what you are getting. when i buy, i'm looking for 10 years use at least.

  11. Mate had a tranny every time it went through a puddle it would cut out. He’d then have to wait around 10 minutes and the van would restart.
     
  12. how can one make a vito look more sporty should one want to go down that route...asking for a mate who has seen some body kits etc

  13. Another Vito 119 L2 user here too! I went for one with windows in the side doors as I found that without, when driving on the Continent I couldn't clearly see traffic from the left on acute angled junctions.

    Prior to the Vito I had a Caddy Maxi. Just need be careful on the height of the motorcycle windscreen ; on my M1000RR I had to remove the screen, which on a BMW is easy. I wouldn't want to have to do that with a Panigale etc
     
  14. not a merc obviously but gives you a taste of what can be done with just a few mods.
    we are currently looking for a new van for the MR's gardening business and considered one of these. but then i remembered how she uses it. :innocent:

    we will probably get a Caddy. but she did mention getting another transporter. one that we can use for her business, fit a canopy to use a drive away awning and use that to cart the bike around when on holiday and weekends rather than the bike trailer. we are just back from touring around England for two weeks and didn't use the cooker once just the fridge and hook up for the lecky kettle.
    makes sense.

  16. I have got a Vito 119 SWB or L1 crew cab. It's a great driver with rear wheel drive 7 speed (now 9) auto and 190hp and can easily get high 40's mpg but as a bike transporter its a mixed bag. Take the back seats out and with no bulkhead you can get 2x 916s in facing straight forward no problem. With the back seats folded up I can get the wife's Fantic Cabellero in diagonally (mirrors removed) with about 1 cm to spare. But I cannot get a Beta RR enduro bike through the back door which is probably the same as your MX bikes without seriously compressing the forks with straps or resorting to a wheel barrow front wheel due to the low roof height. I haven't tried a holeshot device though. Mine has a standard fitted head lining through to the rear door which only gives 119cm of headroom at the door aperture. The bare panel van might be better but then probably noisier.

    the MX bike will be for my teenage son and he is on a kx85
    i wont need to have the rear seats in but i do hope to keep the bulkhead in situ
    do you think the L2 would be a better bet?

The L1 is less than 5m long and less than 2m high with roof rails so fits in multi storey carparks and standard parking bays.The L2 has the same turing circle as L1 since it is the same wheelbase, just more over hang, both have a good turning circle if getting the RWD hence the preferred vehicle of the uber taxi man, but you need weight in the back if on wet grass or 4 season tyres not commercial van tyres. If you have the bulkhead you wont have the head lining problem so it should fit full size MX bikes too or when they move to a 125. You definitely want one with doors both sides since it makes strapping down and loading much easier, most transporters only have one door and they tend to be more expensive than Vitos secondhand. If you have the space go for the L2 the L1 is for hobbits!

    im still not happy about soiling my drive with a van though but needs must
    noted re RWD - i was dead set on getting FWD manual
    will 10k get me something decent-ish?
