V4 Rear Brake On The Pikes Peak

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Roger Coleman, Jul 9, 2024.

  1. Currently 400 miles into the running in period and getting a smile a minute from the PP. However, I find the rear brake to be almost ineffective. Is this a common trait with the PP? In comparison the Desert X is right on the money. Could anyone enlighten me?

    TIA Roger.

  2. Many Ducati models have ‘issues’ with the rear brake, the finger often pointed at the master cylinder’s location, adjacent to the exhaust. ABS has complicated the problem by positioning the ABS manifold above the m/c, meaning you have to push any trapped air up. I’d suggest you ask the dealer to bleed the system at the 600 mile service. Longer term, people have upgraded the hydraulic fluid to a higher temperature spec like Motul 660. Although I’ve heard complaints from BMW owners about unusually high pad wear, changing the OE sintered pads to something like the SBS offering might improve brake feel. 2500 miles in, I find my V4 Pikes Peak rear brake inconsistent, sometimes it’s great and sometimes it isn’t. I’ll be changing pads soon. Andy

  3. In depth & informative, thanks Andy. I'd accept high pad wear as long as it does it's job!

  4. If you are happy to bleed the brakes yourself, I found on my 1200, removing the caliper, releasing the pipework clips and holding it above the ABS manifold improved your chances of a decent bleed. Andy

  5. I’ve also found adding a brake pedal extender helped a lot on my Multistradas

  6. The Desert X rear brake is designed for potential off road use and is the most effective on any bike I have known.
The Multi V4 brake is neither of those things.

  7. Take a look at the update to the rear brake that was done to the Rally. I can actually stop the bike with the rear now if I needed to. They changed the bore size and redesigned the linkage while also repositioning the the master cylinder so it isn't as vulnerable.

  8. Thanks Marc, email sent to dealer about this...

  9. FYI msg from dealer:

The rally had a higher mount and larger piston as it was designed for off road also. The pikes peak runs the same caliper as the superbike as it has 17” wheels. We could try and bleed it incase it has some air In possibly.

  10. Wait, these bikes have rear brakes? I thought that foot lever was just a tester for the brake lights? :D

  11. If it helps I've just passed the running in on a RS and the rear brake is perfectly okay and the same as when I received it. By which I mean it will slow you down sub 30 and will give you something to drag against at low speeds and hold it on a hill. After having the 1200 that's about all I expect from the rear.

  12. agreed. done 2k miles on my RS and its the best rear brake yet.....though thats not saying too much :D
