  3. Lovely job.... just hanging a door ain't easy but making the door as well makes it so much more of a tough job.

Did you put the hinges at different distances from the top & bottom of the door?

  4. Well done, wish I had the skill, but I do hope you keep your plane sharp.

  5. I was informed at 21:28 this evening, that I have become a grandad

  8. What make are you using @Chris as i had a bike covered up for two weeks outside and it leaked through slighty, it did come with a motorcycle purchase so possibly a very old cover that's past it's shelf life.

  9. awww congratulations to you all very precious :)

  10. Using 4 large hinges for this as it’s fairly hefty, staggered with closer spacing at the top, seems to be currently wisdom rather than old evenly spaced . It will be a tricky hang as the floor behind door has a slight rise so need to angle swing so door bottom doesn’t bind on the tiles . Had to get the dremel on the one of the old door hinge screws into the frame as it refused to budge and stripped its head, don’t think it has moved for a good number of decades.

  11. needs to be a thicker type of material, similar to this - often £50 upwards. My manufacture has disappeared and i need to get checking what's out there again myself. All the lightweight versions are a waste of time and money despite their £30 prices.

  13. The reason I asked is because this was one of those pub discussion that could be strung out for hours, why is the top hinge closer to the top of the door than the bottom hinge is to the bottom of the door e.g. 7" & 9" or 6" & 9" or even 5" & 10". Some said it was for aesthetics - i.e. looking down on the bottom hinge makes it appear closer to the floor than it actually is. While others maintained it was to keep out of the tenon zone at the bottom and some even posited that it's less of a struggle with the bottom hinge recess higher up.

And using 4 hinges takes that discussion to another level and easily 3 more pints... :D

  14. I was advised by a family plasterer that the main weight is carried by the upper hinges hence having these closer together, there is supposed to be Utoob vids on the subject but I CBA’d to look them up .

Centuries old tradition of the Channel Islands - Guernsey and separately Jersey - swearing loyalty to the Crown.

  19. Slight Snafu in my door replacing activity. The tile floor has a significant enough rise to tilt the door too much , if it fitted in the hole squarely. Options are to shave about 5mm off the bottom corner opposite the hinges which leaves a gap under the door when closed or remove tiles behind the door. My preference is for the latter currently. It will create a “door mat” area behind the door , its concrete under the tiles so I might try smoothing this /polishing it effect. Or I could make the door wonky & alter the thresh to remove gap. Still prefer the former for some reason.
