998 Front Cowling Fitment

  1. Having recently changed my front cowling with a factory new original replacement, it appears to me that it sticks out a little rather than nesting between (and around) the lights like the one it replaced. An internet sourced pic from another bike having the same issue is attached for reference.

Considering that the front cowling is bolted on by a total of four allen screws (two 8mm ones close to the meshed air filter vents and two so-called special ones on the mirror mount), are there any practical tips in achieving that the cowling sits/rests comfortably in between the lights?

I am thinking whether the brand new 8mm wellnuts that were used for the two allen screws close to the meshed vents have something to do with this (as I was much hesitant in tightening them more, fearing that they would crack the mounting point/surface of the new cowling).

  2. Headlight adjusting screw fouling it?

  3. The headlights seem to be too far back. Can’t you bring them forward then readjust the headlight beam?

  4. Having said that, the bridge in the middle doesn’t seam right. Maybe a gentle heating up with a hair dryer might help it regain its shape.

  5. If it's new old stock, and has been in the box for nigh on 20 years, there's a chance it's had stuff on top and may have been "flattened". Other than bubble wrap, there's no support for the fairing when stored. Might relieve with a bit of gentle heat???

  6. The cowling was made by Ducati in Bologna in 2024. There is no need to chase down doubtful new-old-stock items when the factory itself still delivers fresh and original spec on all fairings (and most mechanical/electrical parts). I'll go over all steps again, just in case I missed something.

  7. Hi Nick. Looking again at the photos, the headlight looks to be too far in.

  8. I hear you @bettes , yet the picture is of a random bike with the same issue (not my bike, yet the issue is very much similar). Nonetheless, the lights and mirror mounts on mine are where the factory bolted them down on the production line; never been tampered with, voluntarily or otherwise. I trust their mounting point to be firm and not permissible of any mm play back/forth.

  9. The actual light unit is just a push fit into the light support. It’s held with a couple of rubber grommets and the headlight adjust screw at the bottom centre. It’s possible it may have been pushed back too far?
