Broken Down. Ideas?

  1. Bike juddered once then I lost power.

    Very small response from throttle but does not rev properly.

    Tries to start and a handful of throttle brings v low revs then when I let go it dies. Not trying again.

    Breakdown en route but wonder if any ideas here.

    Happened to me on my 1098R just after I bought it.

    It’s a 3 year old one on the bike but I don’t know what brand. If that’s all it is I’ll be chuffed.

    Is the MOSFET one a good replacement?
     
  4. Let’s hope it is “just” that.
    MOSFET type has been good to me since I replaced back in 2015.
    Important to buy a decent Shindengen brand type if possible as some fakes can be a bit poor.

  7. I’m still sat after 3.5 hours waiting. They sent the wrong vehicle to recover me with a bloke who knows most about bikes. FFS!

    I had a lightbulb moment and turned ignition on. Fuel pump isn’t priming. My guess is relay?

    Where on the bike is the relay please? RHS or LHS? I’d assume near battery and fuses?

  8. The bike does start and run lumpy. When I let go of throttle it dies.

    I’m not sure abt regrec as I’ve got a full dash and headlights etc.

    Would it run at all with a duff relay?

    Could it be a coil ?
     
  9. I hope not, but it sounds just like my 916 Bip when a belt snapped.
    Battering along at 120+ then lost power and running rough. No mechanical rattles and no smoke, so I rode it the 3 miles home.
    Rang Baines for advice and the told me to pull the belt covers off which confirmed the horror.
    I was lucky, it trashed the head but didn't touch the piston.
    Hope yours is something more trivial and less expensive.
     
  10. I really hope not. I'm out of work so the bike will stay in the garage til I'm earning again if that's the case!

    Belts were done less than 2 years ago - exact ones IIRC - I'll have the covers off tomorrow - after 5 hours waiting to get home, I'm having a cold beer as my first priority!

  13. Sadly you were right - I couldn't help myself so went to the garage after midnight and after removing the fairing, saw a jumbled mass of crap that was once the belt. And a slip belt cover too.

    So now, what to do? A friend suggested getting new belts and then seeing how bike runs....?

    My inclination is (when funds allow) to have it examined and see what damage there is - my guess is that it could be cylinder head, valves and piston to consider, which will not be cheap. I won't know for sure until it's taken apart (which in itself will cost a fair bit in labour).

    Belts were fitted Feb '23 so this is a shock and a kick in the balls after being laid off recently.

  14. Scherm­afbeelding 2024-07-21 om 14.17.15.jpg Buy a 10 bucks endoscope camera from Ali or Ama that connects to your phone, inspect the pistons via the spark plug hole.
    No damage? No need to take the head of.
    With a dual lens version you might even be able to see the valves.

  15. Really good idea, make sure you do your research though, as the poor models have a terrible picture quality. (So bad that you can't really see if there is damage or not)

  17. You might be lucky, the valves "tend" to go closed if the belt snaps and you might just have bent a couple.
    Problem comes if the belt has jumped a few teeth but kept driving the valve train...
     
  18. I had a belt shred itself on my 748 engine
    There was no damage to the head valves or piston
    I stripped it down the exhaust cam was locked solid. All I can think is that chrome flake was in the bearing. I managed to free it off but the engine is still sat on the bench as I fitted a 916sp engine too it.
    1098's don't suffer from flaking rockers though but you may be lucky. On Ducati's it can be hit or miss regarding valve and piston contact.
     
  19. Thanks chaps and as you say @RickyX , crap timing!

    I'm going to try the path of least resistance (and expense) once funds allow and get new belts fitted, then hand crank and see if there is any interference - if so, I'll have the head off and go from there.
