Hello, Recently purchased a 996b, its been sitting for 15 years in need of some tlc Removed cleaned the fairings/tank, Waiting for a 996 plate for the center lift, next job strip down and deep clean Work in progress I have a couple of questions Its one of the first 996, I hear the cam arms are prone to wear ? Is there any recommended upgrades/mods wiring ect I should get done while the bikes stripped down. Cheers
Change battery to a smaller yuasa one, then upgrade starter cables, leave on an optimate all the time when not in use, replace all the relays if it's been stood that long, belts are a must before you fire it up!! A good service wouldn't go a miss either.
its a smaller battery but more powerfull, id change the relays as they can stick and cause problems, i change mine every couple of years as there cheap enough .
As above, new belts before you even think of starting it. Whilst in there check the valve clearances and remove the cams to check for rocker wear, at least then you'll know. Good call on the starter cables, always a wise move (assuming they are the standard cables) battery will need replacing anyway, smaller battery is for weight saving but, personally, I'd rather a big battery that has the power to start it every time - I use a Motobatt which is not light but reliable but many use small, light batteries with no worries, check the cables from the alternator to the reg/rec as they can deteriorate. Otherwise, change all fluids, new tyres, check your brake calipers are moving freely and that the pads are good, check steering head bearings, clutch plates etc.
Take the fuel pump out and check that it's not clogged solid by old fuel deposits, likewise the fuel filter and check the condition of the "in tank" fuel hoses.
Luckily the fuel had been drained from the tank no rust, Good call with the pump filter and hoses I will take a look clean and replace if needed, cheers
Update Some cleaning its coming up very well, the wiring looks very good also Happy so far still waiting on a 996 plate for the center lift, and tools, Will update as I go. Thanks for all the tips and advice guys much appreciated
That's the one, it's a heavy thing but, my 916 starts on the first touch of the starter every time with it. I have the same one on the Monster and that needs a bit of coaxing to get it started as it has no cold start enrichment and it's never let me down. I've had to push/bump/jump start before with a Yuasa. I also have a huge (10kg) 32ah Motobatt on the Guzzi but it takes some cranking due to the car-type flywheel/starter gear. When I bought it the PO had fitted a brand new Banner battery which didn't even last through the summer. So far the Motobatt is still doing OK and the weight hardly matters on the Guzzi as it's far from a modern light weight sportbike...
I agree with you the extra weight for the battery is a compromise, however its worth it Car size flywheel I guess a weighted flywheel is to help smooth out the big v twin motor. a heavy duty cranking battery makes sense for sure. thanks
The Motobatt is strong but it's slightly fatter and a tighter fit, and you'll have to fashion a bracket to hold it in as the standard one won't work with it. You might need to get the injectors ultrasonically cleaned.
Indeed, I forgot to mention that. The existing tray will work (without the rubber mat) but the upper bracket isn't wide enough, I made one from a piece of stainless steel sheet.
