Morning all. I tried starting my 748 yesterday and it fired once then wouldn’t start. I’ve had the spark plug out of the horizontal cylinder and tested it to earth and there is no spark. The bike is trying to fire at all so I suspect there is no spark on the vertical cylinder either. The bike has ran fine previously. And ideas or what to try first? I have checked all the fuses and they are all OK. Many thanks
Possible crank position sensor failure.? Sounds like you have all the symptoms . https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/crank-position-sensor.54979/
Took the crank position out and tested it and it worked. End of the detector is marked as it has been set up wrong. Filed smooth and refitted. Need new CPS though but £180 off Ducati. Anyone know of a generic that will fit please? Mine is a two hole mount type. Noticed that the fuel pump is not priming even though there is voltage at the plug. Gonna check that tonight.
could be so many things, but you can slowly go through all options and hopefully find the culprit. have you looked inside your ECU recently (big rubber bung on the top*), have you ridden in rain the last time before this happened?? * if you still have the "warranty void if removed" or similar stickers still effectively in place across this bung, then possibly make this your last avenue to explore as would seem a shame to disturb, and the original stickers (if undisturbed) were essential in preventing water ingress!
Sure it's just a generic bosch sensor. ( you need to cross ref part numbers) Think my last one was about 25 quid from euro car parts. On another note, have you checked/by passed your side stand switch?
A failed ignition relay can also produce this problem. Always good to eliminate the cheapest failure point first. The relay is the same as the headlight relay fitted. Swap them over and if it is the relay at fault, the bike will start. Again, it is a generic item, so no need to opt for the expensive Ducati offering, rather, match your original relay at your fave motor factor or from eBay e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30278069...mKS4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=WHATS_APP
No spark, no fuel pump prime. It's more likely to be the left relay under the seat which powers both of those things.
CPS give me nightmares, had the same on a Mini I’ve rebuilt, worked fine then one day nothing, CPS are always expensive but unfortunately also too many crap quality ones out there and if it fails it’s completely game over
Thanks guys. The cps is working just a bit damaged. I moved it closer to the flywheel by fitting a smaller o ring and it’s now sparking. Bike still won’t start but fuel pump is not priming when ignition is turned on. Tested voltage at plug and it shows 12 volts. Going to put battery directly to fuel pump to see what happens. Has anyone got the Bosch part number for the CPS?
Right guys. Got the fuel pump running and there is deffo a spark as I just got a belt off the spark plug. Would there be any reason why the injectors are not firing and if so what could cause this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The same relay that drives the fuel pump also drives the coils and the injectors. I had a break in the loom that stopped the fuel pump from working. It's a thick brown and white wire (I'm colour blind so may not be those exact colours)that comes out of the relay and then splits inside the loom. I'm my case, I ran a new wire from the relay to the pump. I would check if you have power at the injectors.
power being a constant +battary voltage with ignition. the - comes from the engine ECU. you can use a capless 501 bulb as a noid light for checking. bend the terminal out and fire them in the injector conector. it should flash when cranking.
