996 Coolant Issue

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Robert Colliver, Aug 10, 2024.

  1. I have a 996 that I have been doing a bit of tlc on, there is one issue that I am struggling with, after idling for a while, it throws coolant out

After some research, and comments from other owners, it was decided that the expansion tank was the issue, however, I have fitted a new expansion tank, and the rubber seal, 20 minutes idling, no issus, at around 25 minutes, it starts spitting steam and coolant out

    Any ideas?

    thanks

  2. What temperature does it start throwing coolant out at

  3. Just an observation, the small pipe that goes to the secondary expansion tank, doesn't have a jubilee clip securing it in place to the upper tank, if that is not secured tightly, would that cause an issue, with it not holding pressure?

  4. Normally, just over running temp, I have tested the fan, which does kick in and out as it should

  5. Should have a clip to secure it as heat will expand the pipe

  6. Possibly a foolish suggestion, but you haven't just over-filled the system?

  7. Bike upright, filled to the max level on the side of the tank

  8. Max level when cold is too much on my 916 and it will cough the excess out. I fill to min level when cold.

  9. Blocked radiator??

  10. Could simply be the pressure cap not sealing properly or releasing at a lower pressure.

  11. i am rusty but what is water temp reading when water spat, have you confirmed where water/steam is exiting, and have fan(s) come on at this stage?

  12. See above

  13. In the video in the opening post, it shows the steam/coolant appearing to come from between the expansion and the filler neck

  14. I will check the level, and drop it to the minimum level, and try again

  15. This should have a clip on it as @Roadtrip said.

  16. I know it should, I can see the markings where it should be, the question was more along the lines of, with the clip missing, would/could that cause the issue, if it is not sealing correctly?

  17. I will replace the missing pipe clamp, reduce the coolant level to minimum, and run it up to temp again in the morning, and get more accurate info regarding running temp if/when it starts blowing off

  18. Agreed. Could be the O-ring on the filler assembly. I'd unscrew the the two bolts securing it, pull it out and check/replace the O-ring (No.4).

  19. I replaced the O ring and the expansion tank by the same time, the filler neck and cap are the original ones though

  20. Ah yes, I missed the 'rubber seal' bit. Has to be the missing clip then.
