Dunlop Mutant Tyres

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by hawkati, Aug 22, 2024.

  1. just for the sheer hell of it and that none of my current tyres would go the distance, i've slung on a set of dunlop mutant crossover tyres for a roundabout journey to misano, lurching to maastricht to visit son & family, nurburgring, munich over alps to misano...then back to family near lake como, see switzerland for the first time ( driven through it three times, at night, dammit) and then gently wiggle home.
I'll report back regarding wear, grip, gigglesome & grim moments etc...cheers, jamess

  2. On what motorcycle, I have just put a set on my GasGas 700SM. I’m hoping for 5K plus, they get good reviews not used Dunlops since the early 90’s usually ride Michelin Road 5.

  3. On an 1198s. I've used road 5's a few times and they're great but fancied a change...
Had great results with D212's on track and roadsmart 3's on the road as well.

  4. Been out for the first time on my mutants, much better than either the Conti Attaks the GasGas came with and the Pirelli Diablos I fitted after. Only had one ‘moment’ and that was within 2 miles of setting off so possibly due to the release agent from manufacturing.

  5. I’m interested to read your feedback. I’m on my 2nd set of Mutants (3rd set of tyres) on my MTS V4S and I love them. Very grippy, as grippy in the wet as the dry, 12-13,000km out of the rear. I’ll be fitting then again when the time comes.

An 1198 is a different animal though and they’re not a Sportsbike tyre so do tell us more.

  6. well i can happily say they were utterly excellent! Did approx 3500 miles in total (no motorways) and on roads from perfect to, well, rocks. Not one twitch or slide in weather ranging from a blistering 37 degrees sunlight in switzerland to absolute monsoon in italy. I've used michelin road 5's for years and trusted them but the mutants are anotehr level of wet weather feel & grip. Bloody great!
Here's a pic taken when i got home - scrubbed up nicely with mountain passes but acres of tread to go.

  7. That’s very interesting (and positively affirming) feedback, especially considering they were on an out and out superbike :upyeah:.

Im sure you got a few comments about the look of them on the 1198 though?

  8. - ah, nope, noone said anything about them at all....though i do understand enough french to catch what was being muttered about me when parked up at the top of the Ofenpass in switzerland - no way on earth could i crawl at 30 behind acres of adventure bikes because the engine was a few degrees from meltdown, so i overtook, well, everyone:laughing:
