To be fair, I have had a 17 mile drive to work this morning, 10 miles of which were on the M6. It took me just under an hour and my average speed was 19mph. Unless someone addresses the ludicrous amount of traffic on Uk roads then 20mph will be the norm regardless of speed limits as you won’t be able to move any quicker.
That’s an interesting question. To be classed as a bicycle for most purposes, eBikes must not have a motor which exceeds 250w, the motor must cut out when the bike reaches 15.5mph and if manufactured after 2016, they must be pedal assist and not have a throttle or similar independent means of propulsion. However, I’m not sure whether they are classified as mechanically propelled vehicles for the purposes of sections 2 to 5 of the RTA 1988. eBikes that exceed the legal power and cut out limits are definitely classed as mechanically propelled vehicles, which is why riding one that has been souped up is so risky, particularly if drunk/high and/or riding on a pavement, because you could easily rack up eleventymillion points for no insurance, no licence (if you haven’t passed the bike test), God alone knows how many “construction and use” offences (eg: no lights, no horn, tyre tread depth, no number plate etc) and that’s before they start looking at drink/drug driving and/or dangerous/careless driving.
I know this is probably an extremely unpopular opinion but households with more than one car should be taxed more/heavily. Theres families round my way with two cars on the drive and two parked in the road. Which is totally shit imo. Then theres lazy arse knob head next door who has two cars but still gets his shopping delivered at 7am on a fucking Sunday morning.
Certainly. I’ve known of police intervention at cycling time trials events because they exceed the 30mph limit. 20mph to a pro racer is a rolling chicane.
@Zhed46 What’s the score with these electric bikes that seem all the rage with local balaclava’d scrotes? They seem to be getting very popular- and they fekin fly btw! I was walking my dogs through the woods recently and very nearly got skittled by one. He was full panic mode because a police helicopter decided to have a bit of cat and mouse with him. Luckily he missed me and both my dogs that were off the lead. Trouble is you don’t hear them coming!
They are chipped for sure. Basically gives them a burst of current to what must be well north of 1000watts. The battery will probably be flat in no time but for sure they’re capable of 40mph… I see they’re the weapon of choice for the young crims in London too. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a clampdown.
The ones around here are mostly modified using ebay/amazon hub kits and often used for the distribution of drugs. They bloody hoon along with only bike brakes to stop them. There's been some serious injuries around here as a result. Local plod have been using e-motorbikes to chase them down.
Yeah, they’re the ones that actually look like bicycles. I’m thinking of the ones that look like small crosser bikes with an effin great battery on them.
I have one which has two modes. The off-road/full power setting gives 3kw of oomph and because it is a pre-2016 bike, it also has a thumb throttle. It will do 40mph on the flat and about 50mph going downhill, which feels very quick when you're not wearing any protective gear and the skinny 26" wheels riding on very crude suspension at the front and none at all at the rear are threatening to bring on the mother of all tank slappers at any moment.
There was a lad of (very?) dubious character on the same ward as me when I had my smash. He was raving about his electric Sur-Ron. Regardless of how fast it was it didn’t stop him being stabbed 5 times though. I wonder why? https://sur-ron.co.uk/
Sur-Rons are a popular choice. ELectric bikes are a popular target for theft and knife point robbery.
Pretty sure you can be done for being pissed on an e-scooter, as I watched one of those Police Interceptor type programs where a couple of chaps on a night out, decided to use a city centre hire e-scooter for some sport, reported by CCTV surveillance, intercepted by Police, breathalysed, arrested, prosecuted, banned, lost their jobs as a result, etc....
Actually, in Japan, to own a car, you need to have an approved parking spot, otherwise you can't have one. As a result the roads aren't clogged up with cars parked all over the place. Plenty of multi story car parks/parking towers available at a price, but also a public transport system that works....
