Have just received an offer for my 2018 1260s Multi. It's the touring version plus top case. Though this later point they might not take into consideration. It's fairly high mileage at almost 25k. Has been assessed as beyond economic repair which I'd already assumed as being the case. The offer is oddly just a few quid over £10k. Seems a little on the low side. However, is anyone with knowledge of the insurance industry aware of threshold values for claims that will make a significant difference when I come to insure a replacement? As the offer, being that value, makes me suspicious that this is a ruse to pay out the minimum whilst keeping me above a certain point that'll enable them to extract even more over the next few years in increased premiums due to the value of the claim... Also there are parts on the bike, that's technically still mine, that ideally I'd like to recover and replace with the OEM bits that I've retained where applicable. These include DP rider and pillion comfort seats, DP alarm, Road lock etc. Adds up to quite a sum and seeing as I'll be replacing with another 1260 I'd like to recover them if possible. Bike was recovered from France by the insurers so I've had no chance to get any access to it. Hoping that this will be possible but not too hopeful TBH. The tracker very oddly stopped working once the bike arrived back in the UK. Battery still had plenty of power remaining. It just stopped dead a few miles up the M20 from Ashford 7 days ago. I had been following around France on a lorry for the last couple of weeks, it had quite a tour on its own without me in the company of other vehicles heading back to these shores.
When my insurer wrote my Seat off, the garage I bought my replacement car from, kindly gave me some information about prices which I used to negotiate with the loss assessor. A trawl of eBay, dealer web sites and Auto Trader should give you an idea and evidence of second hand value. 25,000 miles isn’t quite high. Thanks Andy. Yep, have had a look at Auto Trader for comparative prices and it does seem £1-2k short of the mark. Suprised at how well they hold their value TBH, I suppose that compared to the MV I had previously anything is good
I have valued my 1260s for less than that (for insurance purposes) though it has done nigh on 50,000 miles. So, £10,000 sounds reasonable.
Glad to hear the bike is back in the country Charlie. As you say the price does seem a little low. The usual approach is to find listings for similar bikes (with similar extras) and present them with the evidence. I’m not sure how it would work about getting the ‘goodies’ off the bike. The insurers might argue that if you don’t declare them then it’s irrelevant to the price they offer. They might also not allow you access to remove them (let me know if you need help with that if you do get permission). My understanding is once it’s written off it’s offered to breakers to purchase so you wouldn’t be able to get the parts then either.
Not sure if I’ve missed it elsewhere on the forum, but sounds like you’ve had an off while touring. Hope you’re OK and injuries are minimal.
If you have a friendly dealer you could ask what book price is incl age/mileage/condition. Otherwise it’s just an argument where you supply lots of evidence of similar bikes for sale and push for them to support replacement.
What is the damage? How much would the insurance company ask if you were to buy the bike back from them? I would seriously consider making you an offer depending on level of damage and price. p.m. if you wish.
Didn't have too much time to assess damage, as I had to go to the local hospital and then onto a regional one for surgery. Broken fib that need plate a screws. Suffice to say that bike left road, dug in and cartwheeled end over end after I'd gone though the screen taking the top half of the fairing and instruments with me. No idea on frame or fork damage so would be a gamble. A lot of the plastics and fairing buggered. Picture here. Leg injury was all I suffered, think it was from the landing rather than being ejected from the bike, I did a somersault myself and landed feet first. I've made a good recovery, now walking and driving again. Running may take a little longer but I've only been off the crutches and out of the orthopaedic boot for a couple of weeks. Have been looking at comparable bike on AutoTrader, will be contacting insurance company later today.
Thank for the reply, it seems somewhat inappropriate to be asking after the bike. Sorry to hear of your off. from the photos you got off lightly I hope you make a full recovery. I would still be interested in the 'remains' if there is an opportunity, that way you could retrieve the bits you want too.
I can ask insurers for a price for salvage. The bike is in Liverpool, cost will probably include delivery back to me. Will PM Have PM'd you with more pictures so you can assess as much as is possible from those. The bike is on almost 25,000 miles but with full service history and was in great condition prior to the accident...
10K+ isn't a bad offer, but could be better. you would need to total up the amount you may have to spend to replace the "extra / custom " bits that you have on the bike and see if they will then up the offer to cover the cost of new bits. If they won't could be worth asking much they would want for you to have the bike back as is. Then its a balance of new parts v what they want for the bike, it could be that some of those parts may also be damaged if you do get it back.
Except the extra bits weren't listed on the policy so unlikely that they'll play dice. Spoke to assessing engineers this afternoon, the bike has been declared a Category B write-off. They implied that this means it's to be broken and unlikely that the insurers will be willing to sell back to me. Report was sent to them this afternoon, will call them tomorrow to discuss. Learnt where the bike is located, it's near Guildford so more accessible than Liverpool where the assessors are, I though it was up there as well. If I can recover the seats from there along with the few bits under them I'd be reasonably happy. The other parts are easier to replace. Touratech comfort seats, rider and pillion, are like rocking horse poo these days.
I'm of the understanding that until I accept an offer the bike is still my property. Might risk winding up in a stalemate position on that over the bits.
Happy to go to Guildford, easy trip for me. You can courier the original seats etc to me and I can drive over if you want me to.
My daughter wrote off her car a couple of years ago (rear-ended by a skip lorry) she went to A&E for a check up, all OK thankfully. We went to the recovery yard to collect her personal items from the car and they were very difficult, tell us what to look for and we will get it, its over there - we can get all the bits ourselves. No! Not allowed - not your car anymore! Eventually were allowed to watch as they rummaged around for the bits. They wouldn't allow us to remove the expensive non-standard stereo unit that she had bought 2 months before at all. Just saying, if you want to swap seats etc make sure you tell them they are specially made for your hip/back/pelvis problem (use your own imagination) and make sure you have the OE items with you. Maybe we had a bad experience but worth making sure you can get access to the bike.
Charlie, From my situation, when I p/ex'd my 2018 1260MTS with circa 17k miles on it, with several extras, the best I could get for it was £9.5k, on which basis, your initial offer of £10k seems OK'ish.......
Hope you are recovering well. Not wanting to put a damper on your price estimates..but I have looked recently at UK bike prices as I am looking to spend a bit more time in the UK, only a few weeks back a 1260 PP for £10500. Ok, reduced, it looked good though btw. Maybe just a case of not accepting first offer? Got to say, prices on used motorcycles/cars are all over the place. Just spent €37k on 6 month old Skoda here ffs. There has to be a big squeeze doming on used prices..
Thanks for input on pricing; yep, prices aren't great at the moment. Should play into my hands as winter approaches in terms of buying a replacement. Perfectly willing to buy and then stick it in the garage after a few rides until next year. A decent 1260 PP for £10.5k you say... This is the approach that I fear I might come across. I'm going to try taking the stance of not accepting an offer, or handing over keys and V5, until I can get agreement to remove the seats and alarm as they aren't covered under the policy. Have the OEM seats and loom plug for the alarm connection that I can take along. Prior to accepting an offer, as far as I understand it, the bike is still my property... I can but try.
Be careful what you wish for with non-oem stuff on the bike, unless you have declared it at the time of insuring it. Nowadays they might well reject a claim, if stuff on the bike was not declared.
