V4 New Bike /old Bike Dilemma

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by Nathanhu, Aug 10, 2024.

  1. I find myself in the privileged (or stupid, depending on if you have spoke to wife) that i have an 1199 and 1299 sat at home..

I kind of had a momentary midlife crisis moment and have bought a V4sp2 at a very reasonable price with only 750km on the clock and registered less than a year ago..
with the new bike being released that isnt the huge rush of interest from my side as im still a bit hanging on the the single sided swingarm, if not for ascetics but the fact i can t be bothered to change wheels and stan like when the 999 was released..

ill sell one bike on... but which....?

  3. im almost at that point.....
    for context,

1199s Rebuilt motor with Carrillo Rods, JMH Radiator conversion, BSD blipper, Termi 170 with SPF cans Rapid bike race, and lots of bits and pieces..
1299s 4500 km with Evo update DTC, Akrapovic system, sport pack etc...

not a sales post as im based in EU and taxes import etc would break the deal, just interested in an external perspective..

  5. Great choice of beer, and clearly influences brilliant bike buying.
    Sell the 1199.

  7. I'd say keep the 1199 and turn into a track bike. You know its got a god engine ect

  8. There's got to be some perks for all that time working away from home mate.

As you've already spent a lot of time fettling the 1199, getting things right with the engine and Storm for the track db etc, I would keep that.
Those things wouldnt necessarily add much in value to the sale for others.

The 1299 will pull more cash back, will probably sell quicker as its newer, and if you do go racing as opposed to track may fit in less classes due to the over 1200cc motor.

  9. I guess you have captured all parts of my quandary ..

the 1199 has been my track bike for the last few years, spring rates changes, motor seems very strong, all the small extras like the swingarm pivot and headstock cup changes to match the 1199r are also done, Rods changed, 1199r flywheel and Evo Clutch basket means its spins up well enough.. BDS blipper has eliminated any of the stupid hesitation on the up changes as well. a flurry of BDS switch gear has gone on but not yet tested in anger.. i think my relationship is more intimate with this bike at the moment..

the 1299 is a beast and I find it hard to criticise it and with the Superleggera/1299FE system fitted it looks the part ( mapping is still adjusting on the rapid bike unit)

I think the litmus test will be lining them all up together and seeing what the heart / head tells me..

thanks all for the feedback :)

  10. I'd keep the 1299. I'm biased as I have one too. Its done over 14k mileage and yes has had desmo service. (Snells, great job as usual). I track it too and ride it on the roads. Its coming on 9yr old and yet, I see nothing to tempt me. Maybe an R1. The V4 does nothing for me. Its a fat ugly bloater with a point and squirt tendency. Like a fat ticktocker with eyeliner who reckons shes 'plus sized'. No, youre fat. On track there isnt much between the 1299 and the V4 in normal hands, a professional or a proper tenth chaser will. But us normals? Nope. Ive outbraked v4r's sthous etc and out gunned them. Ive also been done up by r6's etc. Its all relative. I like its beastlyness and despite being a Ducati, hasnt let me down on track once. Full Ti Akra makes sure she sounds ace. She's skinny and lithe like a good Ducati should be. Mods? Rapidbike Pro, HM Sabs QS (very good) and a Corsacorta and DP rearsets and the odd bit of carbon. It gets ragged. She loves it.

  12. I'd be interested in your in your thoughts on it.
I'm just waiting for a v4 Sp to arrive ....

  13. Brilliant :p

  14. So with the midlife crisis in full effect I dragged all the bikes out for a comparison etc..
so far I am really enjoying the v4, very agile and also very stable at speed.. it makes all the right noises and the selective cylinder operation catches me out when I think the bike has stalled at low rpm

edited to add -I need to clean the driveway ..
