Liberty Media To Buy Motogp?

  1. A little bit like the old transatlantic series maybe. You may have to google that if you are a stripling of a lad….

  2. To me this has advantages and disadvantages. Now I did used to go th the Transatlantic series as mentioned above, so I am old enough to be grumpy with good reason.

Once coming home from Brands Hatch I spotted Ron Haslam driving back . We came side to side then both floored it for a short while. So what you ask? the thing is motorcycle racing and racers is still so very much more approachable. Even Moto GP, proper racing and not too much crying over spilt milk. It is currently far less commercialised than other top sports, ie Soccer Formula 1 etc. Just 2 examples of what are our favourite sports strengths and weaknesses. For sure with the new ownership the social media profile will go through the roof. The earnings will skyrocket. The commercial ties will be immense, the riders won’t be able to speak until they have all the right clothes, watches, sunglasses etc on for sponsorship purposes.

so the accountants will show what a fantastic influence Liberty have been, but to us who like to still adjust our chains and do our own tyre pressures we will have lost something forever.

  5. If i remember correctly he smashed his face up (cant remember if it was cycling or motorcycling though), hence why hes had his teeth *ahem repaired.

  6. My worries with the liberty thing will be the amount of bleed between the series. For example will they get the bikes running at Las Vegas the week before the F1 to try to maximise commercial advantage while keeping the costs down? It would be painted as a real commercial positive but the racing would be crap, the liberty style money circuits are already hurting f1 let alone bringing GP onto it.

those saying that it will lessen the bias on Spanish riders though I think are wrong. The simple fact is that the Spanish kids are bread for it, which is different to everywhere else in Europe. You go to Spain and 10yr olds are finishing school, jumping in the van and doing 3-4 hours around local kart tracks or small circuits where the access is incredible. So by the age of 14 these kids have done hundreds of thousands of KM. UK certainly doesn’t have anywhere near the track access, and Italy isn’t even at Spain level. Germany it’s non existent and the US is slightly different again. This major aspect of getting diversity of nationality into top level racing isn’t unfortunately something influenced by Liberty

  7. Nothing I can find on the internet and not mentioned by him in a 2 part interview he did for the WSBK web page. One thing I didn’t know, he was married to Katie Melua. Andy

  8. Loss and gain are the two sides of the same coin.

I attended the Transatlantic trophy at Oulton Park!

    PS
    Did you get past Haslam?

  9. Honest truth. We were 2 up on a Jota . Going up Archway in London we came alongside him, recognised him, went on one wheel past him then drew level at next lights and exchanged thumbs up and laughter. He was not hanging around either!! In the days of no cameras and all that jazz.

  13. The $850m loan is in the market, I guess that means the deal is done.

  14. Do you mean Liberty has borrowed (some of) the money to buy out Dorna ? Andy

  15. Yes, $850m.

  16. So, loading what you are buying with debt before you even take control. How very venture capitalist and very wrong. Andy

  17. Governments and Corporates are addicted to debt. As are investors.
It’s 16 years since the last financial meltdown. The next one is well overdue.
