Potential Stripped Bolt

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by DrZoidberg, Sep 8, 2024.

  1. Been a twat, putting a set of GB Racing covers on, starting on the engine cover, set the T wench to what i thought was 7.5NM, a bit less than the 10NM but was trying to play safe, first bolt never got anywhere near a click before it felt loose, had that sickening feeling it has stripped, now it still spins in and out but will not snug up if you know what i mean, sort of tight but any attempt to get near say 5nm and it moves.
The 3 other bolts are fine, and after 48hrs no leaks, but haven't been out on her.
Give it to me straight, am i up shit creak

  2. Sounds like Helicoil time to me ...

  3. Try a slightly longer screw, maybe 5mm or so.

  4. much prefer the slightly longer screw suggestion :)
    How tricky is Heli coil,

  5. Not convinced that GB Racing is supplying long-enough bolts in their kits. Had the same thing on an RSV4. When I compared the old bolt with new-plus-cover, it wasn’t long enough. A longer bolt did the trick.

Screw a long bolt into the hole until it bottoms out to get an idea of just how deep the hole is, then select the longest length that won’t bottom out when you tighten it onto the cover.

Helicoils are risky on an engine casing if you’ve never done one before.

  7. I've never actually done my own heli coil fix, I have a man to do those for me before I stuff it up. Hope the longer bolt sorts it.

  8. I find inserts much, much better than helicoils. :upyeah:

    This kinda thing:

  9. Ah, the old GB racing issue. Yes, the screws they provide are 5mm short (or they were). This is coz they have spacers as part of the moulding which are 5mm thick, thus the screw does not fully purchase. I had this issue and it was resolved with 5mm longer screws. (Bought from Pro-Bolt, dimpled Ti). The oem ducati castings are like cheese and will thread (1199/1299 are that Mg alloy which is shite)

  10. As an update to anyone vaguely interested, the longer bolt seems to have worked, went up to 35mm and it bit in lovely, now i haven't torqued it up yet as i have a new wrench on the way that hasn't landed yet, but it feels good.
I think a bit of threadlock and a 7nm snug up and it will be golden, will keep an eye for leaks though
    Appreciate all the comments

  11. Another update and advice needed, new torque wrench arrived, all bolts comfortably snug up to 7nm, instructions say "UP TO A MAXIMUM 8NM", what does that mean? anything from 1-8? or do you think stopping at 7 is what they mean

  12. 7nm will be fine they only have to be gently nipped up.
