1260 Pikes Peak

  1. I’ve got a 1260s but I’m thinking of getting the 1260 PP. I just prefer the looks and the bits of bling more than my S. Has anyone gone from a 1260s to the Pikes Peak and was it worth changing?

  3. I like the Pikes Peak livery as well, although the GT is the nicest of the "S" model IMHO.
    I've ridden both and the Pikes Peak is noticeably nimbler predominately because of the lighter wheels.
    You may miss the convenience of the Skyhook although the manual Ohlins are far more adjustable but you'll have to spend some time making it yours. There's an old saying: the Devil you know is often better than the Devil you don't.

Having owned a 1260s for the last 6 years, but having written it off in France at the end of June, I've indulged my lust for a 1260 Pikes Peak that I couldn't quite justify at new prices back in 2018. Out of the replacement options I considered there were only two contenders; the Pikes Peak and the Grand Tour, in the end the PP won the day.

    I wasn't too sure regarding the colour scheme compared to the GT, traditionally preferring more understated livery. However, 'in the flesh' I'm rather smitten. More of interest are the Ohlins suspension and those wheels.

    The bike I'm buying comes with touring pack, top case as well as evotech rad and head guard. All parts I would have fitted myself. I also have a raft of useful parts from my old bike that I've cleaned and, in a couple of places, repaired where necessary to be fitted over the next month or two.

    I was meant to collect this on Saturday but given the forecast, which implied rain of biblical proportions, I put that off until this week. As it turned out Saturday would have been fine... grrr! Aside from a test ride I'm not really qualified to give an opinion on the differences but will report back when I have. She does need new tyres which I have here waiting to fit, as a result the ride home won't be a definitive first impression.

  5. Love the pikes peak livery, I did view one (private sale ) a few months ago, turned out to be a bit of a dog unfortunately
    I’ve owned a 1200Dvt base model the past 9 years, sold it Saturday
    I’ve gone to a 2020 1260S, I ride mostly with a pillion, the skyhook suspension is an absolute God send.

  6. Riding with a pillion and constantly changing the carrying load encapsulates the advantage of the Skyhook suspension.

  7. I was so torn on my second 1260 to get a GT or PP. I eventually went with the GT as I do adjust the suspension a lot and I like that Skyhook makes long distance touring that bit easier whilst still giving me more than enough performance.

    And ultimately, I'll be upgrading to forged wheels so I went with the GT and I'm very happy that I did!

  8. This is the one disadvantage of the PP for me. Girlfriend comes on the back occasionally, though when she does it would be for a weekend away or a tour rather than a regular occasional thing. In other words I'll need to establish the settings for her and me plus luggage and get those noted and just apply as required ahead of any such trip.

    Lighter wheels is by far the most noticeable handling improvement you can make.
    In a way, it's a bit like better anti-sway bars on your car.
    Both are the #1 things you should consider upgrading.
     
  10. I've left them to the very last 'act' of my upgrades :D All I have left is Aella rearsets and Oz Gass racing wheels... Both will likely have to wait until '25 now as they are bloody expensive!

    The bottom line is the S/GT/PP are all the same bike, the PP has Urrrrrlins and forged wheels, that's it. If you can find a low mileage S/GT with all the extras and the price is a couple of grand shy of the next best PP, I'd go with the S/GT and use the extra cash to upgrade the bike.

  11. I just wound the rear pre load knob about 7 clicks when taking a pillion, which wasn’t ideal tbh, but the skyhook is another level with a pillion compared to my old Dvt 1200
     
  12. Both are really nice and yes, super expensive.
    Carlin Dunne had those Oz Gass wheels on his winning race bike.
    Notice the rear-sets too.

  13. I've stared at that photo for hours, he also has the Rizomo rearsets I think? One of a kind as far as I've seen (well, 2 sets for both race bikes).

    I still can't decide on the wheel colour...

  16. For a quick fix I hear you and agree. Preping for a tour I'd want to find a better setting though.

    Had the 1260s for 6 years prior to this so completely get the positives of SACHS Skyhook. However, I need to upstage my 996 riding best mate in the bling wars with his Showa front forks :D:rolleyes: He already has Ohlins rear, that blew a seal the other day demonstrating the rebuild-ability of the Ohlins. Only kidding, always fancied a PP but couldn't justify it.

    Collecting the bike tomorrow. Have DarRs figures printed out to get the settings somewhere in the ball-park for the return journey. Guess I'll need a 3mm Allen key for the front damping and a 14mm spanner for the preload (plus some electrical tape to protect the nuts).

    Bonus is that the dealer has assessed the chain and sprockets as worthy of changing and did so today. Should have asked for a 14T front sprocket whilst they were at it. Will order one along with a new soft link and fit.

  17. Solo works well , very well , you can tune it . I had the PP V4s with the Ohlins set up , for me not as good for hard road riding . The Skyhook works all the time and allows the bike and rider to join , the Ohlins I found were a bit harsh and more suited to the rider who knows the roads to be ridden or track . Okay mine was I feel a friday build , but out on technical back road the Vs standard out shines the twitchy PP V4s . Its a shame as it looks great but its a focused bike not a real thrash machine in all situations , hence its name All Roads for the V4s , the PP is Chosen Roads . I say this as not met a PP that can keep up with the standard V4s , not done track as pointless , as you need a more focused track bike. Sorry bur rejected mine at 1000 miles as it just did not work and following others it still does not ........again sorry for the comments but feel its relative . A bike can be set up to perfection with settings and pressures , tyres ( super sticky) etc , but its the rider that really makes the difference roads , track is different and all the tweeks work , Skyhook and good set of tyres WIN WIN

  18. I did exactly that , besides the blipper and wheels I found the 1200 to be more fun in the twisties.
    I love the PP but it requires more effort than the 1200dvt IMHO , which also takes more effort than the original 1200s

    I also had it set up by an Ohlins shop which helped a lot , however the difference between that and the skyhook isn’t huge

    To synthesize, what are you going to use the bike for? Pikes Peak blast or S Gran Turismo?
    That should answer your question.
