I got done on the A40, going into London for being over on the average 40 miles per hour section, fair cop, can't argue with it, life I guess. I had the option of fighting it in court or a speed awarenes course, obviously chose the latter. I had been to a course years ago, three hours of boredom, quite expensive and obviously a day off work, moving on to the modern version, thirty quid, online, a doddle. It is the most mind numbing course, no way you can shortcut any of it, I got all excited to see that we were fifty percent through, then to realise we were only on the first part, close to giving up the will to live at this point, I stuck with it, just. It's real punishment, I didn't think it would be, it really is the most frustrating couple of hours. To be honest, gratefull for no points, no real fine, I get all that, the certificate in the post made me smile. Will it make me slow down? it will certainly make me think through those average speed areas, we all push it sometimes, I always thought they were a ploy to slow the traffic, not so. At least I got a certificate.
To much trouble if your webcam, internet-connection or power cut takes place. I always choose physical course my next one is a 'Motorway Awareness' ..because driving a lovely marked company vehicle & behaving normally. I suddenly notice the 10foot10foot matrix sign I'm passing under change (I am 8/9 foot in the air). I literally say out loud "WTF was that?" ...next sign says 40mph from 60mph. Instead of slamming on the brakes I get 'caught' doing 48mph. Not really impressed as I don't need to lie too you or the company I represent. I have a quick question regarding those averaging cameras… do you know right away if you fail and get a ticket or is it posted sometime later? Several years ago I was working on a movie and a young wardrobe assistant received 5 automated traffic tickets in one day driving all over West LA doing her job. She didn’t know for several weeks that she accumulated enough points in that day to lose her license. In the end, the director stepped in with his lawyer to solve her problem. I always think of that situation driving around here getting speeding tickets for 1 mile an hour over and losing my license in one day. I about had a heart attack when I got an official letter about crossing some bridge on the M25… it ended up being a toll that I failed to pay!
I seem to remember that you must be in receipt of "Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP)" within 14 days. Otherwise, you are off Scot free. It may be slightly different if you are driving a vehicle not registered to you, as that person or company will receive the NIP instead.
You must have been unlucky with your vehicle speed and the distance to the next speed signs. Worth challenging if it would have lead to a loss of licence, but not to avoid an awareness course.
I'm noticing a lot of young lads in cars with a missing front number plate. Are the average speed cameras front facing? I'd always assumed they were rear facing for the picture?
Mine (A10, North London) was 47mph in a 40mph limit on an average speed camera. I think they work to the usual 10%+2mph.
Not necessarily. It must depend on the area/force as I was caught in the car a few months ago coming home from Hawes doing an average 53mph in a 50mph limit :/
They’re facing either way from my observations, missing the front plate seems to be a ‘fashion’ with da yooves innitt bro. Usually you’ll see the plate on the dashboard for some reason.
It is, however due to the sheer number and for the sake of being fair, most fixed cameras (average or instant) tend to use the 10%+2mph. Whereas a traffic cop, well, it can depend on their mood.... (and I think a lot like to follow it because it removes the uncertainty of someone arguing the point, because it is an established "guideline").

Which ElToro found not to be the case, for me I’ve given up playing speed bingo with cameras whether they’re average, fixed it’s much easier to drive at my clock registered speed and far safer for my licence.
Agreed. I normally just whack the cruise control on but this particular time I just went the same speed as the cars in front of me.
I haven’t the luxury of CC in the cheap seats. Van I use the speed limiter to prevent accidentally pressing the throttle down.
