Ducati Monster 937 - Stiff Suspension

Discussion in 'Suspension help' started by pantsless, Sep 26, 2024.

  1. Hello!

    I'm a beginner rider, 35 yo, M, 180cm, 71kg.
    I've a Ducati Monster 937 ('22). Bought it used @ 1400km, now it has 2800km.

I absolutely love it, although it has 2 issues:
    - heats up a lot in traffic -> I suppose we can't to anything about that
    - the suspension is killing me.

    Stiff Suspension
It felt fine at first. But whenever I encounter roads that are imperfect, it just beats the hell out of me. I feel each and every little unevenness sharply, through my spine.
I'm not talking potholes, just uneven, patched up roads. They don't even have to be really bad, I can feel every small imperfection. The faster I go, the worse it gets.

I think the rear shock can have the preload loosened for 2 more clicks and that's it. I don't think there are other adjustments.

    2 questions:
    - Is it just me? I can't keep up with traffic at times because of this
    - can this be magically fixed with aftermarket suspension or I'm stuck like this? Could you recommend some nice brands or specific parts?

    Thanks!

  2. Are there any suspension set up specialists in Romania? It’ll probably cost no more than €100 for them to assess, set it for you, and/or advise on spring changes if needs be.

  3. I guess there are, but riding to who knows what city isn't something feasible at the moment. I don't know any in my city, which by the way, is one of the bigger ones.

Motorcycling as a sport is newer here, compared to the rest of the world. I'm willing to upgrade the suspension, but only fear is that without advice, I'll buy something that'll make my ride just as stiff :)

So I'll try to find someone I can get expert advice from.

Ducati packed your bike with excellent features like quick shifter, electronics like launch control, lap timer, auto cancelling blinkers etc and a fab engine and brakes but that came at a cost: the suspension. It's the Achilles heel of the bike.
I just checked the owners manual and there's nothing you can do about adjustments.
Even the mighty Dave Moss can't help here with what he has to work with.
However, without trading up your bike, a fork kit and shock that offers PL, Comp & Rebound will definitely solve your ride and is a much cheaper solution than another bike.

With those two components installed, you'll swear you have a different bike and a suspension that's adjustable for different roads and ride conditions.

  5. Wow, I didn’t realise the 937 had such basic suspension :astonished: does it not even have a preload adjuster up front?

  6. Ducati do not help the brand with this sort of thing. Same with my standard Hyper - no fork adjustment at all :poop:

  7. I just had to fix a Hyperstrada (‘Christmas tree dash’) and noticed there was zero adjustability on the front suspension, no preload, no compression or rebound, nothing. I thought perhaps it was an anomaly. Not had a monster 937 through yet so couldn’t tell.

  8. Yup - unless it's the SP version the 821/939 Hypers all need front fork upgrade to work properly :(

  9. It sounds like there is too little rebound damping in the rear shock? I had this on my MV Brutale 800. It felt like the rear shock was too firm and it wasn’t absorbing the bumps in the road but in actual fact what was happening was the shock was extending after compression too quickly (rebound) and hitting me in the spine and unsettling the bike, it was awful, the rebound was totally at odds to what the forks were doing and it was tying the bike up in knots. Luckily the suspension was fully adjustable and I took it in to a race specialist to get it sorted, the Sachs shock actually had a decent amount of range of adjustment and we could get it set up perfectly, the forks on the other hand were a compromise, while they had something like 6 turns of adjustment on the fork tops, only the last 3/4’s of a turn actually did anything, a sign of cheap components and could have done with upgraded internals?

one quick basic test you can do is try pushing down on the headstock and seat unit at the same time and see if the suspension compresses and extends evenly and at the same rate front and rear, if not then that’s probably your problem?

  10. Also read your tyres . Tyres don't lie.
