I've spent far too much time this weekend working out which parts to buy to fix my burnt, melted rectifier plug. I've been trying to find some replacement cable and a waterproof connector, but the sizing and amp rating etc is confusing. Looks like it is 12 awg (the same as 4mm) cabling ? But I can't specifically find a 4mm or 12 awg rated 3 pin waterproof connector. Any help with links gratefully received.
Cut both sides of the connector out, back to good cable and fit blue bullet connectors. You can then heat shrink them. It's a much more reliable remedy.
Far be it for me to appear to contradict Nelly, but I would solder them. They get hot because of resistence. A good soldered joint, properly insulated, will be a safer bet. Bullet connectors will just do teh same over time. If youre flush, send your stator to west country windings. They will check it over and put in thicker cables too which reduces resistence and thus heat etc. Ive not had any issues at all since i did the same to my 98 916.
No worries.........I agree, but from a practical point of view, it's just a right royal pain to work on the bike with the reg/rec hanging off the wiring. Bullets tend to have a better contact area than the spades, so the heat build up becomes less of an issue.
I solder on gold plated bullet connectors to heavier duty silver plated wires, then cover the joints with heat shrink. Because of the gold they don't corrode and have excellent conductivity. I've been doing this for years and never had the old Ducati favourite melting plug/joints since.

I 1st found the gold plated connectors at Radio controlled model shops, but have since got them on E-Bay. They're aren't outrageously expensive at around £1 each. I got the plated wire from West Country Windings. 4mm Bullet Connectors Gold Plated 5-Pair Pack 407364 (align-trex.co.uk)

I just cut and resolder Nelly. Takes moments. Ive had that much practice replacing RR's on my 916 that I can do it blindfolded. Yes, I should fit a mosfet one. But I still have a spare electrex (under 916 seat jic) and the current Electrix one fitted is still going strong. Mine is the two yellow wire stator or single phase one.
I have a spare under my seat as well. The spare though is the mosfet version of electrex. My spare mosfet Fh020 is bolted to the frame of the 1098 ready to go if ever needed
12 awg is what you need, upgrade inc earth points, purchase proper crimps and heat shrink, I did all of them starter etc, no issues in last couple of years.
I have a mosfat regulator rectifier fitted from 2011. The bike has done 55,000 miles and no problems. I have also changed to a BS BSLi-05 Lithium battery. Hopefully you wont need to change but in the future. I would choose the mosfat reg rect. They are a much better choice.
