My eldest son has had his A2 licence for 2 years now, and is looking at doing his full A licence, so, the time has come for him to start looking at a bigger, full power bike To keep costs down, we decided that going down the Cat N damaged repairable route would potentially save him quite a bit of money, so, the search began, I will admit, I may have inadvertently lured him in one direction for a bike, as I had previously let him ride my 2009 GSXR750 which I fully rebuilt And also my K5 Thou From that point on, he just wanted a Gixxer as a road bike As i have purchased bikes from MotoMine before, and the black 750 came from a guy who bought it from them, I kept an eye on their Ebay sales pages, and, a few weeks ago, this came up Looks like it has been rear ended, then gone over on the left side, but, somehow, also managed to bend the slip on end can Studied the pics at great length, to see if I could spot any underlying damage, but, all looked OK, although, I did miss the cracks in both rear subframe pieces So, I sent him the link, he liked the look of the bike, asked me what damage I could see, and asked me to bid on it on his behalf, as he was at work when the auction ended Close to the end, I placed a maximum bid and closed my phone so I wouldn't be tempted to increase it if I was outbid, 10 minutes later, I received the confirmation email to say I was the winning bidder, auction ended just after 8pm on the Friday evening, my youngest son and myself were up early Saturday morning, arriving in Yateley at around 08:20, thinking they opened at 09:00, wrong, Saturday is 09:30 Once open, I went in to pay for the bike, and sort the paperwork out, whilst in there, they had a lovely Pani in the reception area, unfortunately that will not be for sale as a damaged repairable, as it is a Cat B from an attempted theft Once the Gixxer was paid for, the warehouse staff brought the bike out to the van, and I could have a closer look round it, it was at this point, I noticed the broken rear subframes, upon arriving home, I switched on the computer and checked the images, the cracks can be seen, faintly And there it sat, strapped in the back of my van for a week while I was at work
Well, after I got the bike home, I had a good look over it, to try and work out exactly what parts were needed Rear subframe on both sides cracked Gear lever snapped Headlamp/clocks bracket broken Rear wheel Buckled And, a full fairing kit Fuel tank to be repaired Hopefully, it won't look too bad once the dress is removed Scoured the Bay of Fleas for the parts, acquired both OE subframes and the wheel rim as used items, the headlamp/clocks bracket and the gear lever were new aftermarket items After a couple of days, the parts started arriving, it appears that MotoMine also have a used parts side to the company too Had to wait a few more days for the gear lever to arrive First thing was to remove the rear wheel, and get the tyre changed over, to make the bike a bit easier to manoeuvre around Pretty sure that the axle block should be up against the tensioner bolt..... Tyre changed, the guy at the shop asked if my son had "borrowed" one of my bikes, and had a mishap, to which I replied, "do you think I would be standing here if he had?" Wheel refitted, fired the bike up, dropped it in to 1st gear, I think the disc that came with the replacement wheel has a slight distortion to it, so, it needs to come off and be changed Sunday morning, my son arrived for his first viewing of the bike, we had discussed colour options, as I have most fairing parts to make a black bike, and just swap the tank from his 600 track bike
I was just thinking why did I miss the start of this build thread, then I remembered I was in prison on Sunday when you posted it! Looks great, I’ve used Moto mine several time before as you know and never had a problem. What will you do about the missing paddock stand lug? Oh and your postcode is on show again ! (I’m starting to sound like I’m your mother)
Both paddock stand lugs are missing, for now, just grind the stumps off and give it a coat of paint, I have various types of Rear paddock stands, so, it shouldn't be an issue Will sort the post code, sorry mother
In that case you could get some Ali round bar stock and tap a thread in it and have it tig welded on.
The strip down started in earnest after lunch Comparing the old and new headlamp/clocks bracket... Decided that was enough parts removed for now, time to start refitting some new parts, but first, coffee..... The rear subframe was replaced one side at a time, to try to make sure everything went back together as it should, need to get the yellow item number off the left piece, that will be something for him to do The black plastics were fitted just to make sure everything lined up as it should, as he eventually decided that he would like to keep the original colours So, now he has decided to keep the original colours, the order has been placed with MFS for a full fairing kit I have purchased a full kit from these before, for the black K8 750, I was impressed with the quality and fitment of the panels, each individual panel is a copy of the original, and any panel can be interchanged between OE and aftermarket
Couple of small updates, last Sunday, I removed the rear wheel, and swapped over the brake disc from the original rim to the new rim, spun the wheel, no more caliper wobble, so, that's another job ticked off the to do list The other update is, I received an email yesterday from MFS, saying that the fairings kit has been shipped, so, it should be here soon
