My friend has a 996S, 2001 with 16k on the and does need a bit of work to make it road worthy (safe). I am interested in doing a partial restoration myself (not a full nut and bolt job) Now he classes it as a runner as it it runs but i certainly wouldn't call it that because of the following. Forks are leaking and need a rebuild, brakes do need a full rebuild, callipers, MS etc. Belts have not been done in 3 years but the bike hasn't been used in probably he last used it 4 years ago. Needs new tyres (he does have a brand new set) clock screen is broken, chain and sprockets need doing too along with a full service. (plus that horrible smoked screen removed) Condition of the bike is good, does have a few marks but overall it's clean. He also has the single seat but it's the wrong colour. He wants £7.5k for it with the belts, new tyres, single seat cover and service kit (belts etc) which i think is a bit punchy. What are everyone else's thoughts?
He’s having a laugh. If it hasn’t had desmo service at 15000 miles that’s £750 - £1250. As it stands I would not pay more than £5k for it. Honestly.
Yea am with Jack. I sold mine fir £9300 with a load of parts tho so I guess I got £8k just for the bike. With many upgrades and it was mint, fully serviced. £5k and thats tops.

Probably -you're someone who I'd ask before buying one- but its cheaper/ better than the OP's proposition imo
Unfortunately we are in a market that is very tricky for sellers. Most have yet to wake up to the fact that their desirable, rare classic bike has lost a few grand in the last year. Unless it’s an SP, SPS or R then any of these bikes are not special enough to command the premium being sought. A motivated seller and buyer is needed for a reasonable deal.
Lot of non standard “parts” on that and wheel colour looks like a respray. Depends what you’re after. I still think that’s a lot, sorry. If it were me I’d wait a month or two and then look, especially if it’s from a dealer. Then make a real low offer. Real low.
Yeah i reckon he's having a laugh at that price, i sold a really nice 996s with just over 10k on the clock for £9500. Fully serviced, single seat, termis, carbon and all the oem bits too. Currently restoring a 748r and all the bits and pieces you need to buy really add up, let alone the servicing costs for belts, valves, rockers etc.
Ah very good point about the Desmo, he is checking but i am certain it hasn't had it. And all your points basically what i was thinking...it is overpriced by some way. And as mentioned about sellers market it just isn't that any more..bikes are just not commanding the money they once did even newer bikes don't sell that easy. I think the trouble is some sellers forget we are not in a lockdown, we don't have access to cheap finance and we don't have all those free day to renovate a bike because we WFO. I also feel a lot of these older bikes people paid over the odds for them in the first place.... And for this bike, he bought it for 7500k from memory in 2018 or 2019.
