916 Injector Question

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Davyd, Oct 20, 2024.

  1. So I’ve replaced everything fuel tank related on my 916 inc new plugs but she won’t start unless she gets a little throttle which leads me to the injectors but when she does she idles revs free and ticks over nicely.
now she’s been sitting for over 25 years so I’m thinking I’ll take the injectors out give them a clean.
So do any of you guys have any tips on cleaning them. And are they a sealed unit.

  2. 9V battery to open them, then spray brake cleaner through them. :upyeah:

  3. You can power the injector with a 9V battery or any other source of 9-12V.
It opens the path so you can back flush them with a can of brake cleaner for example. The injector itself has a ring of fine mesh screen which should have stopped any larger particles from going into the finer workings. I've had good success with that method although I'm in the process of making a proper tester for injectors so I can see spray patterns as well as sending some cleaner through at pressure. 4. Just a thought, but you are using the cold start ‘switch’ when attempting to start it aren’t you?

  5. They can be a bugger to pull out. Any tips anyone?

  6. Yes I’ve tried using the fast idle button but she just needs a little throttle and she’s fine.

  7. Stick two M3x6 cap heads in the holes either side. That gives you something to grip onto. Lubricate, twist and pull. 17295141834748592919218296548814.jpg 17295142342302806948415571262606.jpg

  8. top tip. i'm finding electrical contact cleaner is screwing up the seals in electrical connections these days. the kind of seals you will see in those injector plugs ect. remove them before spraying any in the plug and make sure the unit you are connecting them to has dried out before reconnecting if you have used it on them.

  9. I tend to use a little red rubber grease, or silicon grease depending on the location, when reassembling things like that with rubber o-rings. I find it makes it easier in the future if/when the same thing needs to be disassembled again.

  10. as said to you once, at great length. if you are removing (say) original injectors that have never come out before, and they are dry and weather is cold then there is no foolproof, quick and easy way to remove them without damage everytime although you might get lucky. Heat lubrication and patience is the best approach. There is a factory tool for removing these, which i think i mentioned to you at the time, and even using these can distort and/or damage the plastic bodies if used in a hurry without "preparation".

  11. All great tips guys. So I’ve the tank turned around and all hooked up is there a way of having the injectors running but not starting the engine I want to see the injectors running without her firing up.

  12. Disconnect the coils or pull the spark plug leads. Then you'll have fuel spray but no start.

  13. I’ve taken two short 20sec slow mo videos of both injectors firing so you guys can have a look and hopefully get some advice. But do I need to upload them somewhere first as I can’t seem to figure out how to put them on here.

  14. You can upload them to YouTube and then link here.

  15. Hopefully the above videos work.
Does the amount of fuel getting through on the very first initial squirt look weak compared to the following ones? I don’t want to take the injectors out unless I really have to considering they are hard to remove and have never been out
The only thing I didn’t change on the pump end was the fuel pressure regulator. would that make a difference to the fuel delivery.

  16. sparked a wee memory here (i aint no ducati specialist) they did share a fair few of fiat engine management components from around that time and after which I am confident with. this sounds familiar to an issue which was related to an air temperature sensor fault. they used the info from the air temperature sensor rather than the coolant sensor for start up. gave exactly that symptom.
if the fuel regulator was failing i would expect poor performance through the revs/engine load.

  17. The regulator is bomb proof. Why exactly do you think the trouble starting is injector related? Did you set up/balance your throttle bodies and check/set the tps?
That's more likely to be causing issues than the injectors.

  18. yip, setting the TPS will increase or decrease injector duration depending which way you turn it. i think i have seen this fault posted before on here many times in the past.

  19. forget the air temperature thing. it's a 2005 onwards fault
