Will a later 1.6m ecu tachometer say from a 2000-ish 996 plug in and work on a 1995 916 P8 machine? I’m resurrecting a 1995 916 that was missing the original tach. It had an aftermarket STACK unit. My tech and I checked the signal from the wiring harness and it has something. We just aren’t sure what it’s supposed to look like on the oscilloscope. I’m hoping it’s just as simple as I have the wrong tacho unit. Any wisdom to share would help thanks!
There have been loads of threads on the forum from years gone by about this You will not get that tacho to work on a P8 ecu. I've never found a thread that has a work around Good luck to finding a P8 tacho and if you do it will be up towards 3 figures
And vice versa I believe. I mistakenly got a P8 tacho via eBay some years back and it didn't work on my 1.6M ECU.
Thanks all. My apologies for dredging up such a known thing. My tech friend and I of course now remember the P8 - 1.6m tach compatibility issues. There is a unit on the ‘bay right now from Gotham for only $400 usd… yikes! I may have to go for that. I find it interesting the Laverda 668 Ghost Strike (remember those?) has the same P8 ecu and tach unit albeit with a different face. Were I to find one of those, my bike is already so modified that I wouldn’t care. Or perhaps I could somehow swap the face from the 1.6m Ducati tach I have. I thought I had struck gold with this Laverda 750S unit. Upon further discovery, just like Ducati, they had gone to a 1.6m ecu. Very interesting. My tech friend is the type of guy to delve into this. My bike has sat for a couple decades. It was sold new in New York and immediately went to Tokyo where it was modified a fair bit. Then it lived in Guam. It was laid up around 2005 and has just sat in storage. I got this and a French market RC30 in basically the same condition from the guy. He bought both bikes new. I would run the STACK unit however after being neglected so long the main portion of the tach needle decided to break off and languish at the bottom leaving a 1/2” stub to do the circle dance.

Would this work on a P8 916 if wired up properly? I wouldn’t care much about the oil pressure light.
That should work for you. On my 851/955cc I run a P8 rev counter taken from a Laverda. It cost pennies on E-Bay (around £45) against what's asked for a genuine 888 Corse item that sell for £800+. ...and it works perfectly! Steve R
Thank you Steve! An 888 tach was another option I was considering. Although every time I see one (888 tach) it seems to be a mechanical cable-driven unit.
The 851/888's had cable driven rev counters, but the later 888/926 Corse machines had electronic items. Steve R
I’m having a custom stepper motor tach made for me by Speedhut. You can request a custom face. I took the classic 90’s Ducati/Cagiva logo and had them separate the elephant into its own world. It will glow green at nite.
Is there another way to regconize a rev counter for a P8 ecu then "ducati racing" letters. And are all the rev counter with ducati racing on it for the P8. Henk!!!
I don't know how to identify them but I do have a rev counter from a 916 Strada, so suitable for the P8 ECU which I'm willing to sell.
Early (i.e P8) 916 had grey, rather than white writing. Also had the word 'oil' instead of the oil can icon.
I went and checked and same on my 1996 P8 916. P8 were not only used on « early » 916s. They were also (and primarily) used on all SP models (94-95-96), to manage the double injectors throttle bodies. I do not know about 916 SPS (97-98), but I wouldn’t be surprised if these had P8s too.
I took it as a given that any bike having a hot motor from the factory would also have the P8. Out of interest, what is the build date of your '96? It seems for the USA market they moved to the 1.6M from early 1996 on the Strada.
