Hi, im new to the forum (1st post) I've never owned a Ducati, but would like to treat myself to a 916. There is one advertised locally, but don't know much about them. Don't want to end up buying a lemon. I'll cut and paste the advert, maybe you can advise me on the bike/price/service history Thanks in advance £10500 1996 Ducati 916, in fantastic condition this bike is an absolute gem. It is an original and quite rare Bologna factory built Monoposto which used the steel rear subframe (Confirmed with the factory in Bologna before I purchased the bike). I haave owned the bike for almost 9 years and maintained it in pristine condition as part of my collection. Its done a genuine 12000 miles from new. Supplied to me by Fastline superbikes in December 2015. It has never been used in rain or wet conditions evident from the corrosion free condition. It currently has a Ducati Corsa carbon fibre air box fitted but I have the original which is in great condition, if you would prefer the standard air box I will reduce the price by £1000. It also has Termignoni exhausts fitted, these I believe were fitted from new and I have original Termi DB killers to go with. The bike is in perfect running order and will come with a new MOT. Any questions or more pictures please ask.
this one? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196688753620?itmmeta=01JB3WK6PCNCWQQS39C7C3W2YC&hash=item2dcb9033d4:g:QssAAOSw6DBm~VvH&itmprp=enc:AQAJAAAAwMxmj+iGvOveHXEBClPb29jraxr8H/kiYj4qpxpjnX8EL5XVPchYO2IC0nMveHe7+MRfKZb2a3O8ot26xA5F4+uynOsxTYkSMrsZ6JkPbAFt0TQpnY9slDaNqiKq16wjRfPcxmIT8ToyPy0vjEVJWcqEU10mUhoBMZ01n2R+xd+AyKPdXHsr/UuL5w/40XV51kTDniQyN/75rhvyDd15t8OpbmSF9x4e/P74o6yWUnoLxIm/EovjSiGXfrzxo5y0ig==|tkp:Bk9SR57rzPzYZA nothing jumping off the page to me from pictures and looks in good order and nearly all original. I would take the standard airbox option. It's important to ask what mileage valve shims and rockers last looked at thoroughly, and who did the work (if any).
Thanks for the reply, is the standard airbox better, or is it just originality that your looking for, or the £1000 price reduction?

It's a little steep for the airbox in my mind, perhaps find another on ebay for an price comparsion., but the bottom line's you want both items for sure.!
for me it's the thousand pounds reduction! but there is the originality as well of course although it doesn't bother me.
I suppose it helps sell the bike later on if it’s got the option of all the original kit to put back to standard
In the current market it seems rather over priced -though I'm no expert! There are others on eBay with half the miles for £8K and no bids. They may yet sell for more though! I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry, there's plenty of these around and its winter.
has that one with 6k miles gone Jez? - couldn't find it. You are "doing a Pete" @XH558 if 8K is an auction starting price and as you say, this is no indication to help with current market price. I'm like you as regards price - lost touch plus they are all over the place at the mo.
The one I briefly looked at with 6400miles is this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30585254...cux26BFhGQQWbYIptBsxcuGg==|tkp:Bk9SR6yVoonZZA I agree, prices of older bikes are seemingly all over the place. My thought is that the actual selling prices are much lower than the perceived value in the sellers minds. The market was really high a few years ago, and people are asking prices based on what they paid... I do see good looking bikes on eBay etc for good prices too often for the higher prices to be realistic, especially in October. I wouldn't buy a standard/ base 916 -albeit a nice one- for £10500 But... I've been wrong before and its not my bike or money so...
we are on the same page Jez, i know exactly what you mean. The downturn in the market you and i know is a reality this time, but sellers really haven't "woken up and smelt the coffee" yet. I chased up a favourite bike of mine last week, but same thing with that seller and was confident enough to leave it knowing no-one else would bite. It's a bad time to sell at the moment, but can also be hard work for a buyer!
..agreed if you have deep pockets but you can get a carbon airbox for a third of that price, it's not like it's a factory fitted item is it?
bought a couple of older bikes and if i could have i would have taken the fairings off and had a good look at the engine been stung by manifold and exhaust bolts corroded and seized in place i want a 916 also, such beautiful bikes
From the pictures this looks very clean. It's almost impossible to keep the zinc plating on the bolts etc in this condition for almost 30 years. It also looks like the engine paint is intact which is also near enough impossible. I have just restored my own 916 and considering the cost of that I think 9.5K without the carbon air box is fair in my book. I know there are cheaper 916 out there but the ones I have seen are also not in this kind of condition. I would be a bit suspicious of mono seat with biposto subframe claimed to be original and I'd certainly want to see the proof that is mentioned.
