Funny you mention crazy journeys to Le Mans, because I only narrowly avoided what probably would have been a fatal crash on the way there c.2007 when one of the group of lads I was riding with (aptly nicknamed "Dangerous Dave") inadvertently forced me out of the outside lane of the motorway and into the 2ft wide strip of grass and gravel between the tarmac and the armco at over 100mph. How the bike stayed upright I will never know.
you never forget those times do you? i remember a near head-on when i wasnt driving. It was our fault but luckily the car coming the other way was as cool as a, and went between us and the vehicle we were "passing" (impatient move not helped by being a RHD car). I was calmer than the driver afterwards, as was quite grounded that day. I can't guess at the closing speed, but would all have been gone, as pre-airbag.
And if one of our other mates hadn’t got between us when we stopped for fuel, Dave would have needed a new set of gnashers as not only wasn’t he in the least bit apologetic, he thought it was funny.
that was the problem though wasn't it? - we all thought we were invincible/immortal and with a lick of adrenaline* things appeared to be funny when they didn't ought to have been. *maybe plus the odd Smartie.
One of my other sliding door moments happened on the M4 when I was filtering at speed (the traffic was doing about 40 and I was doing about 60). I shot a tight gap between two lorries and my right bar end weight hit one of its tyres, which caused a massive wobble and swerve, and it was only my arm hitting the spinning tyre and kind of spitting me out again which stopped me being dragged under the wheel.
it sounds as though you have used up 10 of your 9 lives already! I'm sure i'm speaking for many on here when i say we've been very lucky - many times.
I’ve seen the aftermath of an almost identical incident. Only the two lads on the moped weren’t so lucky. I’ll spare us the details but my mates kids were in a car about 5 minutes behind and fortunately the gore had been covered in blankets before they passed the scene. It was in Lagos btw. Not exactly the safest motoring observed…
