End Of The Road For The R1

  1. Just read that the 2025 R1 wont be available for road use in EU anymore, Euro5 has killed it off and be available in race/track versions only outside the US.

    With the shift to smaller capacity by almost all manufacturers now, is this the end of the superbike market?

  3. This has been the case for quite a while!

    I’m the R1’s biggest fan, I absolutely loved mine but they do have a bit of a reputation, albeit tbh every manufacturer does, mostly from bike racers who do 5 seasons on them without much more than an oil change then wonder why they go wrong.

    anyway, there are a few clean road bikes still around on the used market, but prices have stayed high.

    I’ll have another for sure!

  4. One of the few bikes i would own again and the only big bike.
    Prices have indeed stayed high on these.
    The black / blue carbon R1M is a work of art for me.

  5. agreed, and it doesn’t get the credit for how good it is as a stepping stone from 600’s, the first time I jumped on it I couldn’t believe how beautifully it steered and how nice the throttle to rear tyre connection was

  6. They are great and I'd recommend to anyone coming from 600s or lower power old generation 1000's.
    The throttle connection, noise and sense of control is what makes it for me. Genuinely like a big 600 to ride.

    I have a 2023 anniversary edition which I'll be selling next year for anyone reading this. I say next year as I'm slowly warming up to letting it go, it's only done about 1,500 miles. I would prefer dealing with someone known rather than the Ebay idiots. Its the Red and White Anniversary colour scheme with gold wheels which is probably the one to have when the road bike run finishes.

  7. I had one, just as a road bike. When I sold it after lockdown, it sold quickly with no questions about the price.

    So easy to ride - took it to the Isle of Man to stretch its legs. But even 135 mph did not seem to be much of a stretch for it really.

    I was hoping that it would be as usable a road bike as an old school sportsbike - but it was in another league. There are more enjoyable road bikes out there for me.

  8. I’ll be honest, I liked mine on the road, apart from being completely insane. But I’m so used to Ducatis that the R1 just felt smooth and easy to ride, easy to cruise in traffic etc.

  9. It was easy to ride, likeable. But I wish I had kept this - I traded the MT10-SP for it. For me, not doing track days, the MT-10 SP was a better bike.

  10. I do love the r1 but the amount of bikes I've seen with blown engines put me off a bit.
     
  11. Yeah sad day, I am a big Yamaha fan and had several R6's before stepping up to an R1 as my first 1000 ride (Test ride only). I got the V2 instead, part of me still wishes I had got the R1.

    The big bang R1 was one of my favourite ever bikes - When I get the summer house finished its the bike I want to hang on my wall in there!

  12. I totally get that mate, I was at Snetterton and one totally lunched itself on the straight, and everyone was going “oh here we go, another R1”

    then the bloke walked past laughing with his mate that it was a 2015 and he was hoping to get his 8th year of trackdays and racing out of it!!!! I mean, in fairness that’s a lot of work for any of the bikes to have done.

    I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, and I would deffo run at a min a 2018 bike, probably a 2020 onwards is the one to get.

  13. The early 'non black ' engines did have a bit of an issue with the rods letting go when used hard. Mine was a 2015 model and it did play on my mind a bit to the point i would buy a later model. On the road ive never heard of a problem but mud sticks i guess. And lets be honest if you have shelled out £15k + you dont want that thought in the back of your mind be it on the A14 or track day.
