Monster 1200r Noise Identification

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by scotty38, Jan 1, 2025.

  1. Hi all,

    Happy New Year!

This is a new to me bike and all was well until today when it made this noise when the ignition is turned on. You can hear it as soon as the key turns and then later at 16 seconds in. It did this every time until I started it and since it ran it's not done it, well not on the couple of occasions I tried. It started fine and ran ok btw.
The only difference is that for the last day or two it's been on an optimate and it's not been ridden yet either.
Sorry for the poor video but I didn't record it with the intention of uploading, more just as a record of the noise for me.

Any idea what it is please?

Edit: Just been out to it so about an hour after I ran it and it's still doing it.

    Many thanks.......

  2. the "clonk-clonk" noise at 0.16? - can only guess at the solenoid "valve" on the exhaust system sticking marginally.
    Will just have a Google.

  3. Yes that's it, also does it right at the start when I turn the key but a bit harder to notice as it were. Thanks for this will have a google too.

  4. Does the bike have an electronic steering lock?

Also, do you have any idea where the noise is coming from, front, middle, top or bottom?

  5. Hi, no there's no electronic lock. I'm suffering with my hearing a touch as I've had an ear infection over christmas but the noise sounds to be lower middle ish. I don't feel any clunk in the exhaust servo area if I hold my hand there although I can feel the mechanism is moving initially, not when the clunk occurs that is.

  6. I’m pretty sure the servo motor for the valve is located next to the battery. If it’s not coming from the valve, it could be the motor.

Try it with the seat off.

  7. Thanks again, I'll take another look as I did think the whole mechanism was underneath the battery (that's down low) and then a short run straight across to the valve in the exhaust - two distinct areas (side by side pretty much) to feel for any clunk. As I said this bike, and Ducatis, are new to me so could be off. Appreciate the assistance very much so thanks again

  8. I wonder if your battery is starting to play up and this is the sprag doing funny things ?

  9. Thanks and no idea really although the battery seems fine to be fair. Was ok when I got it and has been on the optimate which shows it as good too.

  10. Does the sprag engage before the motor turns? I thought it did only after you press the starter.

  11. This all happens before I try to fire it up, just turning the ignition key, that's all....
