Monster/Monster+ Monster Sp Suspension Setting Rear Shock Check

Discussion in 'Monster' started by Dev, Jan 7, 2025.

  1. Monster sp suspension check
I am having a play with my suspension settings and have found the rear shock spring preload
Delivery setting to differ from the recommended settings that are given in the owners manual ! (Just might be a typo)

Im not sure if the manual is correct or the settings that have been delivered so just wanted to check with other owners that may still have the setting that was set when the bike was delivered.

To explain the dimension for A is given as 21mm my bike was delivered with 9mm
The suspension is already quite stiff and I would think if I adjust it will make a massive difference

Most of all I want to be sure I am starting from the OEM correct recommended setting before I
Start playing with it, so I can at least return to the correct starting point if I mess it up !

It seems the spring preload setting is a constant regardless of setting up for
Road, sport, or track so being almost mr average I should be happy with fine tweaking via the thumb wheels.

Any Monster sp owners that could have a look at the rear shock for me and check it would be a great help hopefully 1 or 2 others have a visible 21mm at A and my bike will be proven to have the wrong stock setting .

See pics and thanks in the hope of resolving my query.

  2. Just checked mine and the same as your photo … approx 9mm.

  3. Maybe its an error in the manual! thanks for checking

  4. Evening…. Mine looks very similar to yours. IMG_0335.jpeg

ETA: i did play with the compression settings shortly after collecting it; was a little too stiff for my liking/our roads. Softened it back and front by 2 clicks to start with. Ridden it about 300 miles since and it’s a lot better, i maaaay just try another click once we get some decent testing weather

  5. So its defo looking like a typo ! thanks will either have to assume that 9/10mm is the OEM setting or maybe ask Ducati/dealer.

  6. If the 21mm is actually 9mm then I have set as per the book for standard and although ive only done about 60 miles
in comparison to my old plus its genius smooth as silk and sharp at the same time.
as has been said all we need is some better testing weather.

  7. Mines 9mm as well. If it was 21mm the suspension would be like a brick.
I did back all my settings off and it made a difference.

  9. @Dev - I think an issue here is that you said your rear sus was 'quite stiff' and you might have been thinking of trying to increase the spring preload by 12mm, which would have made is considerably 'stiffer'. There are no standard suspension settings - as it's a matter of your riding weight and how you want the bike to feel & respond - there are just nominal starting positions for all adjustments that may have been set in the factory. These all benefit from adjustment to suit you & your riding style & requirements; starting with setting static sag...

  11. Pre load is for for setting
Pre load is for ride height setting only.

A rule of thumb is :-
static sag - 10mm in rear and 15 to 25 mm at the front.
Rider sag 30% front and 25% rear. (so idea is level to front bias, depending on your available travel)
Rebound - down and up at rear. Down, up and settle at front (small settle, compensate for engine weight)
Compression to your taste of comfort and or weight transfer.

As an aside I always run 36 psi rear and 34psi front for solo, on any road bike.

And do it all after a 20 minute bike ride to warm up the oil in suspension.

Did i mention stiction? no better not, lol.
    Good luck.

  12. Thats a great help Ta
