  2. Butane (the blue Calor bottles, camping gaz and lighter fluid) does that at 0.5C at sea level. It’s an absolute pain when camping/vanning.

  3. AFAIK that doesn’t apply to all as some military records were destroyed in a fire unfortunately.
My Grandfathers records don’t exist at all, all that remains is one photo of him before he was sent off to fight the Bosch.

  5. There was the Operation Dragoon landings in Southern France 1944.

Then as a stretch the long overdue counterattack from India into Burma and then further South.

  7. Just started to read this, I just can’t get my around battening down in a chunk of metal hoping that either the enemy miss or just don’t have the correct weapon to destroy the tank you’re in.

  8. I was at Bovington last month with my son and we thought exactly the same as a tank is more of a mobile metal coffin than an armoured safe haven. I was reading an account from a WWI tanker about a battle in which anti-tank rifle rounds had penetrated the hull armour and had pierced the jerry cans full of petrol (which in those early days were just stowed inside the body of the tank) and so they were all ankle deep in the stuff with any number of ignition sources which could set it off at any moment. Terrifying.

We both agreed that we’d prefer to take our chances in the infantry rather than being trapped inside a burning box.

I love van-lifing in very cold weather. However, I have a diesel heater rather than relying on Calor gas, which has an annoying habit of running out at 4am, meaning you have to go outside and change it when inevitably it’s raining, freezing cold and the dog decides to wander off somewhere while your back is turned.

Edit: On closer inspection, I’ve realised that’s not actually my motor home, but it was there somewhere. Just outside Aviemore, Feb 2022.

  10. Respect.
I tent to drop the roof and turn up the oil heater, but only when it gets a bit chilly or too windy.
Cuddling up to the missus also helps :)

  11. Did you have the opportunity to sit inside a tank. If you have time and enough interest tankfest day is great event but does get really busy, when I took my Son there we got to see Tiger 131 start up then later watch it drive around the arena among other tanks.

Lots of fathers encouraged their Sons to enlist in the RAF on account of their own experience of trench warfare……

  12. Sadly not. We got there late as my son was jet lagged and overslept after flying back from California where he’d been playing in a footy tournament. We only got as far as the Leopard, but the tickets are good for a year, so we intend to go back in the summer when, like you say, there are events going on.
