748 Which Belts?!

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Mark996, Jan 10, 2025.

  1. Hi all,

    Happy new year!

    So just starting work on my collection to get them brushed up for the new riding season, and thinking about doing the belts on my 748. However, after shopping around already to buy some belts, I've been met on a couple of occasions with the warning that some later 748's have different teeth configurations than earlier ones....

    So my 748 is on an '02 plate, however I'm entirely conscious that that alone doesn't necessarily mean it's an 02 bike.

    Therefore, I've taken the engine number down as being ZDM748W4*018120*

    Any gurus happen to know which of the 2 belt variants I need to be buying just from this information alone??

    Also, might be controversial this one, while I completely concede that

  2. I can't tell you from the engine number, but the tell tale is whether the cover plate between the two cam pulleys has 4 or 5 screws holding in place. The plates on the left side of the heads are the same, so the easiest one to check is the front LH side with the fairing off.
    If it has 4, then you need 73710091B, if there are 5, then it's 73710101B

  3. As always mate, absolute super star - everything’s stripped off the bike already for the winter, so it’ll be easy for me to check when I get home….cheers so much mate!

  4. A simple photo of the side of the head is all you need to determine

  5. This is a 916 head, early 748 and non 'E' later 748 are the same;

    This is a 748E type head (actually from a Monster S4 but the same design);

    Note the 'dropped' exhaust cam meaning, it needs a shorter belt (and shorter exhaust valves). You can also clearly see the 4 hole/5 hole plate difference.
