Buying Desmo With Warranty Replaced Engine

Discussion in 'D16 Desmosedici RR' started by Kent Desmo RR, Jan 4, 2025.

  1. I bought a 996R from the same dealer that are selling this a few years back. I also had a few Qs about its history that they couldn't answer. i trawled through the paperwork for the bike when i was in the showroom and dug out the previous owners details (and those for the guy they were selling it for) and then phoned him directly. might help, or at least help put your mind at rest, speaking to any previous owners??

  2. Early ones had nasty coolant in. Check its been changed to the later spec.

  3. Can you find another one with all the boxes ticked for £60k ?
Can you find a better option than a reduced asking price , so lets say £55k ?

For me those answers would tell me what i would do.
Personally i would want the very best model i can get with a price to match so £65k with full paperwork is for me better.

Time will always allow you to find others even though sometimes you feel different.

  4. The fact you paid a deposit AND THEN they told you about the engine change would put me off big time .

  5. Hi all.

I hate it when a threads stop without a conclusion!

    So here’s my update.

After quite some time back and forth with Ducati Italy and UK - Bike Specialists were patient whilst I did this due diligence.

Ducati have confirmed they sent a new, non numbered engine as a warranty replacement for my chassis - which was already substantiated by the Ducati warranty records for the chassis, and the installing Ducati dealer, the new, news was that Ducati confirm the correct procedure was followed (ie they don’t send an engine with the old engine number stamped nor another engine number) and that from their perspective the bike should now display an unnumbered engine.

They have provided a letter to this effect so the paperwork is now up to date.

I have since purchased the bike but not yet taken delivery as I sent a few things to be installed (17 inch rear wheel, tyres and some other service parts I wanted doing that were beyond the usual oil and filter - OEM chain, front sprocket (Talin rear to fit the Dymag sprocket carrier), correct coolant, oil and fitness etc so I know it’s as ready to go as possible when I receive it.

The bike should in theory have one of the last engines made and supplied well after the coolant issue came to light (with about 1000 miles on it now) so you’d hope it would have benefit from any minor developments the factory made as reports of the engines were fed back (maybe wishful thinking but would seem better to have one of the last than first of these engines).

Equally it does put me some way off the valve service at 7.5k so there are some practical benefits of the replacement engine.

Whether the true non matching numbers matter affects my ability to resale…..hopefully I’ll not have to worry about that for some time.

I do plan to ride the bike, I don’t do many road miles and have other bikes so it will be sunny special occasions but I’m looking forward to the experience and to show it off so others can enjoy it. I’m cautious about getting hopes up on how well it rides given mixed media / forum reports, no sports bikes really feel that great on the road and I have a track orientated bike for track days so it won’t be used truly as intended but unlike many it will get used :)

I’ve not pressed BS to get the work done too much given the time of year but now Springs here I’m ramping up the pressure and hope to have the bike in a couple of weeks.

  6. Sweet!

I think you getting all that info (assuming it’s in writing) will ensure decent sell-on value.

Still, I hope it served as a bargaining chip for the purchase (which was a commission sale IIRC?)
