I'm looking for advice on screens for my 2017 1200. I’ll be using the bike for a mix of sporty riding and touring, and I’m around 6ft tall. The standard screen directs all the wind straight at my head. At speeds of 70+ or in slightly windy conditions on the motorway, the front feels a little bit unstable. I’ve tried a clip-on screen, which helped with wind deflection, but it seemed to make the bike feel less stable again. For context, I’m coming from a sports bike where I’m used to zero wind on my helmet/arms with stiff steering, so maybe this is just something I need to adjust to? What screens do you recommend (manufacturer, style, or size)? I’m worried a bigger touring screen will make the front feel even lighter at higher speeds, but I also don’t want a sports screen that will batter me with wind. Should I be looking at two screens, one for general riding and one for touring? Ideally, I'd like just one. I’m a bit lost, so any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!
Going to try the Puig racing screen to see how it is and if needed try with spacers/different angles. Worst case I'll just use this one in the summer and existing with the clip on for bad weather/winter. Also ordered the Evotech Carpuride mount whilst I was at it!
I'm 6' tall too, though that's not the whole picture. Helmet, clothing, riding stance as well as your preference for winding roads or autoroute all play a part. I've tried the following on my previous 1260s Multi: Std screen - A lot of buffeting, felt both on head and torso*. Puig touring screen - No improvement, on my previous bike and MV Turismo the relevant version of this made a night a day difference so disappointed. Touratech screen - Something of a sail, expensive to boot and no improvement. Puig sports screen - Good as wind goes to shoulders with helmet in relatively clean air, plus as I assume surface area is smaller and displaced air less, buffeting is reduced significantly. Pikes Peak carbon short screen - Looks the part but practically very little wind protection. I have a set of screen spacers from Iconic, these move the screen forward and also takes it a little more towards the vertical. I've tried these with all of the above and have arrived at a place with two solid options that work well for me. Std screen with Iconic spacers - A big improvement, I've sort of come full circle with this and find this the best compromise for long distance riding if significant autoroute is involved. Puig sports screen with Iconic spacers - This is perfect if I'm not doing much in the way of autoroute riding and what stays on the bike as my go-to set-up. I've recently changed helmet from a Shoei GT Air (original version) to a Shoei Neotec 3. This coincided with a new to me 1260 Pikes Peak that came fitted with a Puig sports screen (I'd sold the previous one) as well a Pikes Peak carbon and the OEM screen. It's the combo of this new lid and the Puig sports screen with spacers that's really sold me on this set-up. Not yet sure if I'll revert to std screen and spacers for forthcoming 10 day Dolomites trip or stick with this, just day one home to chunnel and first 200 miles on autoroute, the rest on nicer roads... Since I got my spacers Iconic have produced a number of other products that incorporate spacers. @Jamie Clare, who owns Iconic, is a member of this forum. * a lot of the buffeting IMHO comes from the narrow waist that's common across all 1200 and 1260 screens. Iconic also do winglets that fit these models to help mitigate that. It's interesting to see that the V4 Multi comes with winglets as standard...
Super helpful reply, thanks. Sounds like the Puig racing is the way to go for now and I'll test that out fully before looking at the spacers you've listed.
Awesome pictures and really helpful as it'll be having the same screen and GPS mount. Was curious if it would stick over the screen but looks just covered.
That's a large 7" Carpuride Android Auto panel. Without the screen spacers it meant having to the tip the angle of the adjuster on the mount downwards to get it onto the Quadlock mount. Otherwise the panel would hit the screen as you twisted it onto the mount. Something like a Garmin XT shouldn't be an issue without the spacers. With the Pikes Peak screen the corners of the AA panel were exposed. With the Puig screen my panel is completely covered from the front.
@Bumpkin what screws are you using for the screen? Did they come with the Evotech mount or something else?
These come with the Iconic spacers. Stainless steel and decent quality. The ones I have were moved across from my 2018 1260s to my Pikes Peak a couple of months ago, so been in use for 6 and a bit years. Showing no signs of age. Here's a close-up, along with the std screen, from when I originally fitted them in late 2018.
You do mean the fairing screen, rather than the GPS screen? You mention the Evotec mount which confuses me a little... not hard these days The thumb-screws on the Evotech mount come with it, or rather with the adapter for whatever GPS/system you have asked them to match their mount to. Originally I bought the mount for an SP Connect system but have recently purchased the Carpuride so had to order the adapter for that and swap the head over. I like the way that the Evotech mount is modular with these adapters available separately. Good, considerate design Didn't much like the bright blue Quadlock lever that came with it though so ordered a black one from eBay. More stealth, less distracting when riding without the panel fitted and less obvious to thieves that there's a quick release mechanism (not that I'd leave it on the bike, parked up, for any length of time).
Nope you were correct in the first reply, the screen. Just checked out the Iconic spacers and ordered that too. It's an expensive day! Reason I asked is the current GPS fixing I have needed new bolts for the screen but looks like the Evotech doesn't fit the same way.
It neatly clamps into the cut-out on part #2, passing though the corresponding cut-out on part #1. Mounts in a similar way to the Ducati Performance mount that I had previously. It's very neat but can wobble around a little on bumpy roads. This is down to the screen adjustment mechanism, not the mount itself, but as the latter is effectively hanging off the former any play does give a bit of movement. The heavier your GPS and the slacker the adjustment mechanism the worse this is. My last 1260 wasn't as 'tight' in this regard as my Pikes Peak, it does vary bike to bike. I've never had a real issue with it. My 1260s did 25,000 miles before I killed it and my PP is on 16,000 miles.
The hole in the Palmer Products bracket, that can be seen in the second picture, is there to allow fitment of another bracket/bar to hold nav options. I just don’t use one.
Wish there was a screen that was wider out there around the bottom half, surely wind is coming round the sides of that! I found with the standard I was getting buffeted in front of me but then fitted the shorter puig racing after seeing so many good comments, stopped that and worked great for me but the wife felt she was getting bashed even more at speeds so whenever I take her out I fit the standard screen again if we’re doing miles on motorway speeds, next I’m thinking puig touring and sticking with that but can’t believe no one does a wider base half screen, my triumph tiger 800 had a puig touring that was wider than standard and was cracking.
I have seen some wider base screens when on my hunt for my replacement. Luckily no pillion for me so don't need to worry about the back half! Suggestion above is also getting additional side flares that might be worth checking out.
I think the new V4 screen is a much better solution (I know this is not relevant to the V2’s). The winglets and cut out in the screen stop the buffeting I used to experience on my 1200, DVT and 1260. I was a big fan of the Wunderlich deflector, I found this was great on motorways. I used to use a short Pikes Peak screen for everyday rides and just put the larger screen and deflector on for tours.
