In simple terms, the role of a Police Officer is different from that of a Police Constable...An officer is an official working on behalf of the limited company registered at companies house. dont believe me? go to companies house website and see if your constabulary is on there..odds are it will be xyz police service whatever, TRADING AS xyz constabulary etc etc..This makes it a private enterpirse with shareholders. Fact. Obviously most Plod are unaware of this. The primary role of an Officer within a company is to control revenue. A constable is there to uphold the law and to prevent a breach of the peace. Re pressed metal plates...This will not prevent illegal plates being made..look at the US. You can buy any size 'tag' in all manner of fonts and colours. Whats to stop anyone else doing the same? Most people on bikes have illegal plates for two reasons...a) they look nicer than that stupid ugly thing, and b) to protect their licence against the proliferation of cameras and snoopers.. UK plates are the biggest in Europe, if not the world with easily the largest letters and numbers..i cant think of a country where the plate is comparable, except perhaps Holland. Thing is, DVLA make up all of the rules..the reason why they kick up so much about plates is because they cant collect money from you from their cameras...then, they cant ANPR you..Then they cant check if the vehicles nicked, then they alledge they cant follow an investigation should your vehicle be able to help with their enquiries..all valid reasons...but we all know the real reason is because its harder to identify and fine you. Old Bill, DVLA etc all make up the rules of the game, and then screw you..appeal in court (rented on a daily basis by the local council...look it up) and they lie and screw you again. Any appearance in court is merely there to decide how big the fines going to be.. Fuck em. i dont co operate with the Police under any circumstances.
You're a cheerful soul tonight Funky! As for plate size, I think you'll find Germany beats us on plate size, the Dutch plate is smaller.
I've never quite understsaood the obsession with small plates so many bikers have. If a car driver did a hit and run on you and you couldn't read his plate as a result of a small/italicized plate, i reckon bikers would be the first to complain.
once theyve figured out how to use a fkn sat nav. they'll never take me alive....now into zee bunker...
true. when was the last time a biker did a hit and run though? it does happen, but come one, seriously?
The system in the UK seems unnecessarily complicated and full of loopholes to me. Swiss system similar to German one: Plates are pressed steel issued by cantonal authority (they have the cantonal and Swiss flags on them. First 2 letters of number is the canton). The only place you can get a plate is the cantonal authority. They are not that big so look fine. Plates stay with owner not vehicle. If your vehicle is stolen the plate is cancelled. To get a plate you need to go to the authority with MOT, if required, and insurance. The tax comes through the post as a bill for using the plate. If you don't pay the bill, the law comes round and unscrews your plates. If your insurance lapses, the company informs the licensing authority and if you don't hand in your plate for storage, it will once again be removed. Advantages: all vehicles on the road are taxed, legal (pretty much) and insured. No market for vanity plates You don't have to remember to do anything much - it's all taken care of. None of the poxy "this year's reg plate" one upmanship. Simples.
The Swiss/German system does make complete sense, if the plate stays with you we can still have cherished plates (although the market for "Wayne" plates made up of mis-spacing and precariously placed nuts and bolts would dry up overnight) My own view is the only reason we have not adopted this system is this country's complete insistence of avoiding anything European if possible however sensible the proposal and the lobbying by the SMMT to artificially boost car sales with the number plate dating system
truly excellent piece of music and words rhyming nicely with 'Lancia' - tragic and mysterious end to singer David Emmanuel though.. :- Smiley Culture inquest finds reggae star died from self-inflicted stab-wound | UK news | theguardian.com
Think of all that lost revenue in tax fines, non display fines, plate sales. And dont forget there are companies making money out of the data flow for all these thungs. Its not free ;-)
Depends if you want a system that works with taxed and insured vehicles on the roads, or if you just want to generate profit-making opportunities for business. In post-Thatcherite Britain, I imagine that the answer is the latter.
Persoanlly one which means 20% of my insurance premium isnt put aside to cover those wankers who drive uninsured and crash. So vote a yes from me
I'm pretty sure that an effective system will generate more public money than the current UK system of tax the compliant and make a show of chasing the non-compliant. But this isn't "post-Thatcherite Britain", Glidd. She's still here ... buried somewhere ... but don't worry, I'm working on that.
Different story! But a couple of years ago my brother and I were going at quite a hefty rate of knots! It was a Wednesday evening in june, quiet dual carriageway , 140+, when we slowed to around 85-90 a police car, lights flashing caught us up! We pulled over and the officer got out red faced and steaming!!!. he was furious saying he had been trying to catch us for over 10 minutes, after getting a severe bollocking, which I admitted that I was satan and a fucking idiot! About 10 times!!, And after we had said sorry even more, he told us to piss off and don't do it again! a bit of grovelling goes a long way! if I was rude we would have got banned!!!
Because our Politicians and senior Civil Servants,,(calling themselves the,"First Division",makes my friggin' blood boil...arrogant tossers...*fume*...), are just a bunch of ego-tripping nest featherers who insist they know better than anyone else...drive around our near neighbours in Europe and see hundreds of examples of good design, from motorway slip roads to public transport, completely ignored by our bloated bureaucracy....idiots
