Stopped for no road tax, allegedly ....

  1. I had a similar incident years ago in my old Golf VR6, unmarked car was following me for miles, didn't clock that it was plod (I was going well over a ton on the A43 around Brackley toward Silverstone) then the light came on and I though "Shit, this is it, I've had it" like you, I said sorry a million times agreed with everything he said in his patronising lecture about inappropriate speed etc, couldn't believe it when he told me to "bugger off and be more careful" and then just drove off, he must have been coming to end of his shift. A bit of humility goes a long way, in my experience.

  2. Could it be that you both passed the 'attitude test' that Andyb made a mention of

  3. perhaps it is an attitude thing, I have always been a lover not a fighter

  4. Hmm back in the day when i was young and recklass I had a marked volvo t5 chase me for about 10 miles. He only caught me after I stopped at traffic lights for 3 or 4 minutes or so. The copper went mental saying how he was doing 110 and I was out accelerating him and he couldn't keep up with me. I felt sure I was going to get banned but went to court and ended up with just 3 points.

To make up for that lucky escape, a few months later i ended up getting flashed by speed camera 72 in a 60. Went to court and got 5 points for it. So evened out in the end.

  5. Quite. Also factor in the dyed-in-the-wool British class snobbery for 'private' registrations and age related plates...the counter arguement would be that age related plates help to boost sales..*yawn*...

The yanks (and Dutch??) use the same system...the plate stays with the driver. much easier.

  6. I have two and rather like them, has ever I do agree they are bit vain and snobbish

  7. my last 4 encunters.1. test driving c3 throught killmore checking for vibration at 30mls with customer acused of speeding in a 40 when i denied it he went off on one. no ticket.
    2. pulld over by for no tax 2nd day of the month van was taxd on line when explaind (nicely as ever) got ticket for not displying.
    3. car spun out in front of me at baracauldin twistes smackd in to wall and lying in midle of the road on bad bend, i offerd to inform local police as station just up road rang the bell and got an angry little bastard shouting at me because he was aff duty.
    4. got stopd by original copper and accused of crossing little pedestrian bridge in oban when denied nicely whent off on one, no ticket and had to produce docks again.
was this over a life time no. last 6 montmhs. i am renownd for my patience and manners, but still get badgerd by these nobends.
i have a cleen licence for last 20 years and no criminal record witch reminds me when i was 11, i found £72 handed in to local office i was acused off steeling it, put right through the system all the way to childrens pannel. if one off that type off copper is on here then shame on you.

  8. My experience, including 24 years in the civil service, leads me to believe that the UK will only import a new system when, and if, it has been discredited elsewhere (HR performance management systems, "lean working" practices, etc).

Some sort of desire on our part to be able to say, "Hey, we made it work!" - regardless of the cost?

  9. The jury is out for me on private number plates. Part of me quite likes the idea, but then the other part thinks they are quite wa*ky.

  10. Didn't work for me with no MOT

I apologised and hung my head in shame tried not to cry and smiled sweetly but nope I still got a £60 fine

    :-(

  11. depends what they are, one of mine is my exact initials and two numbers (dates from 1945) my other is three letters and three ones (dates from 1952)

IMO the wanky ones are mis spaced to spell something that's only relevant to the owner.

  12. My view on number plates is the more nondescript and least memorable the better. Their point in life is surely to bring you to book for the errors of your ways.

I am aware of my errors and would sooner avoid the book. Being thrown at me.

TBH I can't remember my plate. It's the canton and then a 5 digit number. I only remember its predecessor which was stolen about 13 years ago. My plate is that nondescript.

  13. I put a private plate on my wife's car to save the hours she was spending wandering around car parks trying to remember what her car looks like.

    It worked a treat.

  19. I have a private plate on my car...........it relates to me only but generally appears quite normal..........If I ever get pulled by Plod and I don't have any documents with me, at least I can tell him something about the plate that will prove my identity.
