What happened me was, on my policy they noted the exact full exhaust system that was to be fitted (race only- not for road use) and then filed it under a heading which documented all the road legal modifications I had made. I asked them a yes or no question, “am I fully insured under the terms of this policy whilst having this exhaust system on the bike?” They refused to give an answer. Anyone who rides on the road with a race only- not for road use exhaust system and believes they are covered, they are only kidding themselves.
I was told it was ok as a performance system as long as it’s road legal. When I mentioned it wasn’t they then said they would not cover me. it’s still worth discussing as I would love the Termi system on my 698 Hyper but I need to be certain it’s properly covered. No one has given me that guarantee so far.
After watching that, I’m very happy with my decision to stick with the stock exhaust. I could not live with the race system. Bit of a throwaway comment drawing comparisons between the chassis, on road, no difference Andy
Somewhat taken aback by the comment about his top speed down the back straight at Almeria, the same indicated figure I was reaching on my 2010 Multistrada 1200S track bike Andy
I am in no way trying to pee on your parade DRS, or that of anyone else either. But, what you are showing there is in no way indicative of having proof of insurance with a non-road legal, race exhaust on the road. I only bring this up because the consequences of being liable in a major accident, whilst having such a system on the bike, will see your insurance company wash their hands and turn away. For my own peace of mind, I emailed the insurance company, quoting exactly which exhaust system I intended to fit and asking if it would be covered. They refused to answer. That tells me everything I need to know. Plenty of people take the risk, but I’m not one of them and I returned the exhaust. Looking back, I was naive to think they would even consider it, sadly.
That's kind of where I'm at. If I don't like it, I don't think it'll lose a huge amount, given the deal I've got, so I could always chop it in if needs be. At least I'll know then!
If Ducati want to sell full systems on road bikes, they should be the ones to recommend insurance companies that will cover them, then there would be no doubt. Quite why they've taken the decision to call the system not road legal just because it's a bit louder than stock seems ridiculous, but we can blame the EU for that.
You should be asked to sign a waiver agreeing that you will not use the full system on the road and the exhaust is not road legal for more than just noise. Clear you have made your mind up, I hope you enjoy the bike. Andy
Be sure Ducati would recommend one, if such a company existed. Our annoyance at the full system being marked non-road legal, would be surpassed only by Ducati’s.
If the insurance companies went to the minute detail on all aspects of the bike, thousands of policies would be null and void. Where do you draw the line?
I believe you are based Hants/Surrey. If so, join the SurreyDOC, my brand new V4RS with a considerable options list including full system will be handed over to me at the grand opening of Ducati Hailsham at end of April. Message me for more details. I've come from a 1260PP and skipped the V4PP as there is just something very special about an RS!
With all due respect, a non-road legal (race) exhaust is not a minute detail and ultimately, it will be the insurance company who decide where to draw the line.
What insurance company is that and of course the rude question if you don’t mind, how much? Mind you, I’d go for the PP, preferably with a full Akro pipe.
