I came home after a happy blast this evening, being the first time for ages I've had free. Parked the bike on the flagstones to cool down, to clean up, and went off to change out of my riding kit. Having cleaned it, I went to put it away, necessitating moving it a short distance - blow me if I'd forgotten to bring down the keyless fob from my riding kit. Not to worry, I thought I'd take the opportunity to try out the PIN Code unlocking mechanism, which worked fine - started her up, put her away, then tried to engage the steering lock - which wouldn't! It worked OK once I'd brought out the key fob, turned on then off and THEN locked the steering. Does anyone know if this a feature? Is it because I tried to operate the steering lock after turning off having used the PIN Code entry to start - the fob was out-of-range? Or is it the start of steering lock failure that I've read about on here? I was considering getting a warranty (£300 for a year) and this may influence that decision A LOT!
Mine did the same, used the pin to unlock and start but wouldn't re lock after switching off. I have a 2012 S Sport.
Same problem on my 2011 and my 2013, could be an issue with insurance claims if you are unlucky enough to get it pinched.
The intention of the PIN system is really a fail safe should you lose the key or the battery fails. It will free the bike and enable starting to get you home. It's not intended as an alternative to the key so I'd guess that's why the locking is disabled unless the key is present.
But no real reason why they'd not enable steering lock on pin entry-what if you needed to secure it whilst travelling home?
Not the Ducati one - dealer says it can only be added on at end of two-year one and mine had passed that by time I bought it, but they're offering an added on one including recovery for £300. Sounds like a good idea bearing in mind I've got 17500 mlles on.
After 18 months I contacted my dealer to extend the manufacturers warranty on my 2011 as I was told this was the deadline. The service dept advised waiting until 2 years and taking out Ducatis Red Cover which was the same as the standard warranty but included breakdown cover. At the 2 yr mark I was told that I could not have the Red Cover as it was only for 2nd hand bikes at the time of purchase from the dealer and that the door had closed on the manufacturers warranty. Genuine mistake by the service manager but left me a bit high and dry. Resolved the issue with a 2013 model, none the less worth bearing in mind if you are in this situation.
For all that insurance companies are variable in behaviour and possess a tenuous grip on reality, pretty much all of them realise that your average steering lock provides minimal resistance to being stolen.
Dont think I have ever seen a steering lock mandated on a policy as a requirement, either two wheels or four. Usually if you have used a device to lower premiums or mitigate risk is it then included as a requirement. When I found that having an alarm , chain or anchor etc did nothing to my premiums I simply never bothered. If it gets stolen and I have fulfilled my obligation then its the insurance companies problem. I am sure if it was my only form of transport I would feel different. As it stands it's a luxury item and I feel I pay my insurance company enough (Fully comp, protected no claims etc) , let alone incurring additional costs to mitigate what is their risk. I use a disc lock that I acquired all the time, but nothing beyond that.
