Repairing A Puncture Properly.

  1. As above - the rear Michelin on my hyper has a got slowish puncture....the leak is round the plug i put in a couple of years ago...since then ive gained the skill of being able to change my own tyres. So now that i can remove the tyre on my own-some all the Puncture repair kits are quick fixes...is there a repair kit that i can use to fix the puncture from the inside of the tyre....everything i search for are plug based...?

  2. Change the tyre.

  3. The above mushroom type patches, fitted from inside are fine, not only are they stuck from the inside but, unlike those repaired from the outside, the tyre pressure holds them in place. Tyre repair places like Kwik-fit etc. use them.

I had a 2 punctures in my 916 rear tyre, both repaired this way no problems whatsoever.

IMO plugs fitted from the outside are for temporary, roadside repair, I wouldn't trust one beyond a get-you-home job.

  4. Good enough for touring or commuting.

Track days, racing, spirited progress - not good enough. No repairs, fit a new tyre.

  5. Well, you say that… funny story… back in the day, the bigger race teams were getting fancy tyres in decent quantities, and the rest of the paddock, including me were scrabbling around to afford customer grade tyres. The accepted disposal route back then was to drill half a dozen holes around the tyre to stop rival teams being able to test with them and dump them in the paddock skips…. Do I need to say more?

  6. Mushroom plug from the inside out with vulcanising cement is completely safe for basically anything, anyone that says otherwise has no idea what they are talking about.

Even the old rope style repairs are good for the life of the tyre.

On a side note wait until you realise that every stagecoach bus in the UK uses Bridgestone remoulds

  7. It’s a personal choice as to whether you trust a roadside repair or not.
I ran a temporary plug in a rear tyre for around 5k no issues whatsoever.
