888 Tank

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by farmster, Mar 24, 2025.

  1. Good morning guys and girls !
so after leaving my 888 in the corner of the garage lovingly wrapped up
For three years due to family commitments and generally been very busy. I got it out last weekend to find a pinhole in the tank !
And also corrosion, but not that excessive can only blame it on the water separation in the new fuel ? So does anyone have a 888 Strada tank for sale please ???
The tank was only painted three years ago and was absolutely mint. I’m really struggling to have it stripped and dipped and welded up. I have looked into the sealers and the epoxy hole fillers. Can anybody give me their experience on these products.
    Thanks
    Paul

  2. I had exactly the same problem on my rgv, and tried epoxy.
It did work but I was never happy with it.
Eventually had it professionally repaired and it's been fine since.
    Obviously would need a respray.
I did the usual rust removal before sending it away and found the area around the original hole was like a spiders web when it was cleaned.

  3. As it stands now it's no use to you at all so although costly it seems to make sense to strip it check it over for any more potential issues and have it repaired and painted with the inside treated to protect it long term.

  5. I can’t comment on the welding but when my wife’s NC35 was got out of storage the tank was rusty inside and the tap was trashed. Used that stuff and it was awesome and sorted it.
    Can’t recommend it enough

  6. Bilt hamber is bloody brillant stufffff I use it on my TD5 Defender from rust proofing to injecting the wax into the bulkhead

  7. if you are absolutely certain that that is the worst of it, and you have enlarged it with a circular dibber or similar to check, then I would be happy to solder that for you for nothing if you brought it to me, it just depends where you live. this is by far the best option compared with putting a liner in the tank I can assure you.

  8. Hi Chris, sorry I’ve been away in Italy. You think I might have been able to buy a tank here don’t you ! Where are you based, I am in south Staffordshire. I still have to remove the rust from the tank, before it can be soldered ?.
I have since spoken to Jeff at Dream machine paint he quoted £450 to repair it & repaint it including the decals.
I’m not to unhappy with that….. thank you for reaching out.
    Kind regards Paul

  9. I have a couple of 888 Strada tanks that were rust free last time I looked at them. Neither are perfect the best on was on my 888 but has a leaking overflow pipe (likely cracked in tank, I “fixed” it by blocking it. I removed it a while ago when a decent tank came up for sale. It also has a small dent in the top , paint was good last time I looked. The 2nd I’ve never used and someone filled an area on the top and side to “fix “ a dent. It needs paint and possibly repairing properly as it’s been part painted/primer for some time. I can try to dig them out this weekend if not sooner, though access currently blocked by other stuff .

  10. I am Surrey way. Only suggested to get the bike on the road but if you decide to de-rust interior etc then the task starts to snowball and i understand this, as it usual happens to me..

  11. Hi Macca
Is it feasible you could pm me some pictures of the tanks ?
Your location & how much you are looking for them.
    Cheers Paul

Thanks for your kind offer though.
    Cheers Paul
