1200 DVT Tyres Question!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by glenandem, Mar 13, 2025.

  1. My business partner and I spent a day on an (ahem!) GS1250 riding on every tyre that Pirelli and Metzeler make for that bike.

We both said we thought the Angel GT2 was the best tyre on the GS (on the road) but we both thought it would be a hard sell trying to get someone who's bought an 'Adventure' bike to fit 'Sports Touring' tyres but the reality is, they were better than everything else. I thought the Trail 2 was the second best tyre of the bunch - it's like a sports tyre but with the word Trail in it, which helps get Adventure bike riders comfortable. It's not the best tyre for trail riding..

Obviously on the DVT you don't have the same sizes as the on the GS (120/70-17 and 190/55-17 as opposed to 120/70-19 and 170/60-17 on the BMW) so you have more choices for conventional rubber on the DVT than the GS but I would say the Angel GT2 / Roadtec 02 / Bridgestone T33 and Dunlop Roadsmart IV are all great choices for the Mutlistrada 1200.

  2. As always with tyres, it's down to how you want to ride and the surface you'll be riding on.

Personally, I've been keeping with Metzeler M9 RR's for a while now, they have held up brilliantly in torrential rain and are sublime in the dry. The only issue is they can be a bit slippery when cold.

  3. I bought my 1200S used with Scorpion Trail IIs on and switched to Michelin Road 6 GTs which I personally much prefer all round and give me better longevity. I am about to have my third set fitted for this year's touring.

As mortals we don't get the chance to do side by side comparisons. The vast majority of us experience no meaningful comparison from one tyre to the next as we replace a worn tyre with a new one. I find a lot of credibility in MCN's testing of sports touring tyres and they have again found the Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE as the stand out tyre. I have these on my VFR800, and have no complaints whatsoever.

IMHO, the 1200 DVT is a sports touring motorcycle, and a heavy one, with adventure style ergonomics ... but it's not an off road machine being so top heavy and with 17" wheels, road biased suspension. I guess if you're swallowing the marketing hype about the 1200S as an off road adventure bike, you'll also swallow your tyres saying TRAIL on them.

The other takeaway from Neeves' test results is that you cannot buy a bad tyre from amongst the top brands they tested, it'll come down to availability and personal preference/riding style. Certainly the tyres are far better than we are as riders if you'd allow yourself some humility.

  4. Negative. False info here. Most likely as an honest mistake.
The Angel GT's don't tend to follow the lines on the highway. However, the Angel GT2 may as the front has two parallel groves which the GT's do not.
BTW, I'm on my second pair of GT's. Not the GT2's.

  5. I opted for the gt rather than the gt2 as a few people mentioned the 2s having this problem.

  6. I've had Angel GTs on another bike and really liked them.
I've got Metzeler Roadtec on my current bike and they have transformed the ride compared to Scorpion Trails, completely different feel to them, I imagine Angel GT would feel similar due to the profile.

  9. I have gone from Angel GT 2 to Road 6 recently and I am glad that I have.

Things I didn’t like about the Pirellis, looking back: They didn’t want to hold a line/lean angle in a corner, they tracked/followed every tar snake they could find and at low speed such as around town they felt unstable and unpredictable on any rough or eneven surface. On the other hand, I have found the Road 6 hold a line in a corner much better and are nice and neutral in lower speed usage.

Now that they are scrubbed in, I look forward to exploring them more.
