  1. I have found a snotter and am going to view it and have spoken the vendor. he knows less about vans than me and its clear it has some issues
    - coil pack/plug dash light on?
    - rear brake dsah light on?
    - osf wing mirror trim missing
    - looks like its got to be rusty
    - MOT advisories suggest tyres need replacing
    - weepage from steering rack
    - front brake hoses toast

what do the experts think and what do i need to focus on when i view/test drive?

  2. Snotter doesn’t come close :scream: no need to be an expert to suggest you don’t waste your time. Having the same advisories year on year doesn’t indicate “a very well looked after van” to me. Blown rear shocks and persistent advisories on tyre wear are big red flags for me. Andy

  3. I didn’t realise old vans were still so pricey, maybe my Caddy is worth more than I thought.
That looks pretty straight body wise, they are known for rust though. I snapped a glow plug on my Vito and it caused that light to come on but it may just be a general fault light.
Mirror trim is an easy fix.

  4. Inlet manifold cracks are very common to, causes a load of rough running issues which are hard to pinpoint.

  5. i bought a merc years ago, went with my heart instead of my brain

cost me 4 grand over 2 years to keep it on the road until it blew up

one thing guaranteed is as you fix one thing something else will pop up

it worth no more than £1500 as well

    fuck it off

  6. I’ve had 2 Vitos having done a combined mileage of 380k between them. Not had any issues that are major, just general wear and tear as you have with any vehicle.

Personally I’d avoid this overpriced ‘snotter’, I prefer my vans to have had at least some regular maintenance both preventative and reactive.
This van sounds a shambles having being owned by at least one owner who appears to just want to turn the key and drive on regardless.

If his 20 year old van is 5K, I need to reappraise what I ask for my 13 year old van next Month. I was only going to ask 3k for it……….

There will be others come along just bide your time.

  7. funny init, and just goes to prove my regular advice to customers when they ask, what do i recommend? is probably correct. never ask a mechanic, cos generally speaking, we only remember the bad ones. the Vito would almost always be my last choice. and at 5k for any 20yr old midsized van seems way over the top unless mint.

  8. thanks all for the advice which has been heeded... back to the classifieds

  9. According the .GOV MoT history web site, it’s done 18,000 miles in the last 4 months having done 17,000 in the last 6 years. Walk away. Andy

  10. i didnt even get that far
    good catch thanks
    ive asked the vendor

  11. It is hard to believe that the milage is right on such an old van.

  12. MoT history had it at 36,000 something in December last year, previously averaging about 4,000 miles a year back to 2018, about 6,000 miles a year in the first 3 years. Andy

  13. From what i can see - attached

    2021 36k
    2022 41k
    2023 46k
    2024 51k

not sure why any of that is bad and why i should walk away. but im no van expert

  14. That’s not the record I saw, WN65 HCH ?

  15. Ah, okay HDH, the position of the white fixing confused me. Just my luck both the registrations are Merc Sprinters ? Andy

  16. That hasn’t the nasty Renault engine, that’s the facelift model which was introduced 2011-12.

It has the same engine as the Sprinter, if the previous owners were sparkles or plumbers just doing domestic work in a town that explains the low mileage.

Looks a clean example, I paid 12,500 for mine back in 2015, that seems top of the price range.

SWB model though, but has a nice feature sadly lacking in both mine….a drivers armrest.

  17. A ringing endorsement  like it…

In the interest of balance, I’m on my 3rd Vito over 20 years. Currently in a 2019 119cdi bought new. Gotta say they’ve been very solid and relatively trouble free. Had a 2008 V6 diesel and the ecu shat itself but that’s as bad as its ever got.

A fairly good pointer to reliability/cost is seeing them as very popular among the taxi and courier services. I’ve always fancied a T5/6 based purely on aesthetics, I think they look cool (not the new ones, Jesus ) but I think the Vito is more for your money.

  18. So what? A courier firm might have bought it at 17k miles. Those guys do space shuttle mileage.

  19. cheers for the input - i think its def worth a look but vendor does not have the service book but has the invoices. does have both keys.
only challenge is that its about 200 miles away near york - any of you lot live near york?
