  3. Certainly not, well, not the 3rd century monk who gave his family’s wealth to more needy families and was canonised in the 15th century by Pope Eugene IV. However the jolly, fat Santa Claus, Dutch immigrants in the US during the early part of 19th century are credited with creating, that commercialism now worships, nah :D Andy

  7. I wasn’t aware we needed to have favourite saints, so I had to google who was the patron saint of lost 10mm sockets. Needless to say, I remain slightly sceptical ……… IMG_2734.png

  14. Happy Shakespeare Day.
At least WS actually existed, was English, and made a real and massive contribution to English language and culture.
    Unlike George.

  17. There is a lot of conjecture about Shakespeare wrote all of the plays or whether a few were lifted. And even some who think he lifted them all from other writers such as Oxford, Bacon, Marlowe and others.

That aside, Shakespeare added nothing much to the culture I am interested in , and I dare say the same for many ( most?) people today. Despite seeing many of his plays, I fail to see him above many other writers from down the ages. However the impact of his (or someone’s else’s writings) certainly have added colour to the language. But so have many others. History is a funny old thing. Someone a few years ago got slated for saying the Teletubbies probably have more impact if you are looking for big Warwickshire based input. Not sure I could quite agree, but know where they were coming from. To me Shakespeare now forms part of this collective misty eyed desire to return to ‘better times’ that never existed anyway found in certain groups, and that’s not a good thing.
