I notice you posted earlier in the year about ECU problems and possibly a poor service being done. I think that's where you need to start.
Na, I dont think so (but happy if wrong). It comes down to the fact that it just wouldnt be running right at all if it was actually using that amount of fuel unless its to the stop everywhere :biggrin: +1 check oil as you never know but it isnt like an old carbed bike where the float needles would stay open dumping fuel into the cylinder. I would think more likely to be blocked injectors or similar but chucking loads of suggestions into the mix is probably counter productive. I would also rule out fuel leaking from the o-rings (again happy to be proven wrong) as quite frankly it is over a red hot exhaust and this is an example of when it actually happened.... It might be daft but are you sure your petrol station is metering out correct quantities of fuel? (assuming you use the same one as lots of us do). I wont use the garage around my corner as I know weights and measures are not correct. No water in the tank? I guess if there was it would be coughing and farting like a Guzzi. Have you managed to check the colour of the plugs yet?
If he fills up like me, I stop the fuel when it gets to the top of the filler hole. Then see what the cost/litres used are.
Haven't had that problem on my current bike but had it on my ZXR. Basically the tank overflow pipe (runs throughout the tank from top to bottom) had corroded. Every time pressure built up in the tank the fuel would spill from both the top and bottom over flow. worth checking your overflow pipe at the bottom to see if its damp frm fuel after a ride.
Oil is smelling like.. well oil so can rule that one out, breathers and overflow traced through and seem to be ok and blockage free, Injectors.. ChrisW has offered me a suggestion and will do that over winter, under tank O-rings have checked and seem ok. The service bodge was sorted out with the help of ChrisW and got it running ok, this problem was before the service anyway, just seems a little worse as ive managed to use the bike more this last 2 months. I've emptied the tank of fuel, was only about a litre in it.. put it into me mates car, filled up again and added some in tank injector cleaner with it so i'll see how i go on with this tank full.
just had a thought, when i changed the fuel filter, i couldnt get the hose clips the same as the Ducati ones as they were crimped on, i did manage to get some jubilee clips the same size and put them on and tightened them up just so they pinch, could this mean anything? e.g. not tight enough maybe sucking air or fuel in etc? Just a thought.
If it was sucking air through those connections it would be running lean, not rich. If it is sucking extra fuel through then it wouldnt be running right as it would be practically flooding to get the level of mpg you are describing and im sure it would be backfiring like mad and bogging down. Have you managed to check the condition of the plugs yet?
thing is though in the past ive managed to push it 120 odd miles before running out of petrol, im riding it no different
Sounds bizarre that you get such low MPG without the symptoms of rich running. My 749 usually gets to around 90 miles before the fuel light comes on. Last fill up was at 110 miles and she took around 13 litres. Perhaps it's the borrowers?
I managed 126 to a tank the other day Normally around 100 but the light sometimes comes on at 80 and I dont ride any different or anywhere different either. I now only put Shell Nitro in it from the same station and im getting almost identical mileage each time. Could it simply be crap fuel from certain stations?
could be that your odo isn't reading correct, brim the tank, go for a ride using gps to get correct milage (check against bike odo) then brim the tank again and work out your mpg, it's the only way to correctly get a solid reading. Then take it from there. Like someone else on here said it could be maf sensor. if your still getting poor results. You could ask your local MOT garage to analyze the exhaust gases, any good bloke will do it for free.
Good sound straight forward thinking there.... I was getting appx 120 to reserve then giving it a bit I got 100 to reserve. Thats filling the tank with the bike upright.
