Seems to be a glut of bikes being stolen again at the mo. Most seem to be the up into a van kind. What security do you use when out and about or recommend. When I started riding it was customary to ride with a big chain round your neck and a padlock .. I know madness now when I look back "orf with your head an all that!!" I have a xena disc lock alarm but to be honest its a mare .... I used it over night at a friends and it was fine when I left it but unbeknown to me it decided to become faulty in the night and I kept the road awake with its dying bleeping squeal all night. Also are there any compact small disc locks as I only have a tiny bit under my seat, and years ago I came off with a metal tin in my pocket and that 1. hurt like hell and 2 made a mess of the top of my leg so I can only imagine what a disc lock in my pocket would do. An alarm lock would be best I guess ... can't fit an alarm to my monster as it hates them!! But would like to protect the bike a bit I would be heartbroken to loose him .. pretty much all I have left!!!
make a bracket to secure a disc lock to your bike when its not being used, that way lock is always on your bike and you don't have to carry it wifes monster has one attached to redundant exhaust hanger bracket (now has hi level pipes) doesn't look pretty but neither does a vacant space on the driveway or in the garage
You could always fit a small tailpack and carry a chain and disk lock again not ideal but is useful for bits and pieces as well.
I have two disc locks - one large one for home and this one for travelling: ABUS Grant 68 Victory X-Plus It has a fluorescent rubber surround to the main body and is very handy. It is definitely small enough to fit under a seat. Comes with its own waterproof bag, too. View attachment 2543 You can see its size compared to my keyboard above! Good luck
If its going to end up in a van ( which as you say is common), a disc lock is a waste of time, plus smashing a disc to get the lock off isn't difficult. Any kind of alarm is only useful if you are in earshot, I've only ever had them fitted to keep insurance companies happy. Being able to chain your bike to an immovable object is your best bet, although this is only a deterrent, as if they want it, they'll take it. Sorry to sound so negative. My Sedici has a tracker fitted ( insurance insisted), and I fit a disc lock if I'm leaving the bike for a longish period of time, not 'cos it'll stop it being nicked, but so I can show the insurance co. that I tried.
That little abus one looks good yes suppose I could carry a little tail pack but the chains I use ate massive!!!!! my 125 was lifted up in the air

I occasionally use an Abus disc lock because sites said it would last 7 mins before they killed it, which is as good as it gets. Deters the casual thief. Nothing will deter the professionals. If your bike is only moderately desirable you may not have to worry too much about professionals. Once had my 916 lifted during a Bol d'Or weekend: steering lock, disc lock, chained to 2 other bikes underneath friend's 1st floor hotel room with window wide open. If they want it, they take it.
That is SO true... I've got to admit I'm on the paranoid side... So both my bikes are fitted with an alarm and a tracker (monster came with datatag). I also use one of those round disk lock from Abus when out and about and can't keep an eye on the bike. There are places I wouldn't bring/park my bike tho... Too worried I will never see it again. OMG, I sound like a security freak, but the worse part is that I know it probably won't make much difference if they really want it...
When I go into town I always park in the same car park, it is a longer walk, but the bikes are covered by CCTV which makes the walk worth it.
I will have to look at the cost of a tracker .... Id be heartbroken to loose my bike my bikes eat alarms so they are a no no so maybe a tracker at some point. I could train one of my rodents as an attack rat mind!
An issue with Trackers is they can be easily jammed with a £25 gadget, and disk locks can foiled by a skateboard or dolly under the wheels. If the thieving scum want it there's very little to stop them (other than a bullet).
I didn't know that. Dammit. Is that common knowledge amongst the thieving community? I doubt you'd want to elucidate on the gadget here for obvious reasons. Seems the scum is always one step ahead.
