Dunlop Sportsmart Tyres

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Edward Hitler, Sep 24, 2013.

  1. Anyone with a 1200 Multi fitted Dunlop Sportsmart tyres. The Scorpions after 5000 miles of scratching and touring are now shot, good mileage though. Don't want to go down the line of the PR3's as don't like the look of them.
Your kind constructive thoughts are welcome.

  2. Ive used them on the Multi, great tyre lots of grip, more suited to dry riding than in the wet I thought. But didn't last long, rear shot after 2500 miles. Running z8's now, getting more miles, but I wouldn't say they offer anymore grip than the sportsmarts

  3. I've used them on the ST4s with much the same experience. I was very disappointed by how quickly they wore out.

  4. I am quite surprised at that, I have used Sportsmarts for a couple of years and I have always got good life out of them, a friend runs them on his 2011 Blade and managed 5000ish miles out of a rear including a bit of touring, some scratching and 2 days on track at Angelsey!

Maybe the power delivery on a twin is harsher on tyres?

  5. Yep, these are my choice and what I am currently using. Great tyres, had them on my KTM. Who cares what milage they do, they stick like hell and thats cheaper than going through the hedge.

  6. IMHO best tyres for a sporty use of the MTS , I had them for a track day and AFTER that a trip to Bologna/Ducati factory and return via Route Napoleon and twisty alpine passes. Great feedback, they take a few minutes to get to temperature but then they are great. Not bad in the wet, either.

Run them at 2.1 - 2.2 bar max.

  7. Currently got SportSmarts on my Multi. Very, very good. Plenty left after 3000 miles. Decent in the wet too as long as you don't push things too hard.

  8. Been using them on the R1 for a couple of years now, great tyre, bags of grip even in the wet. Love them

  9. Since the original scorpions ran out, my mts 2010 has been on them ever since. get them at FTW tyres in London about 100 each when front or rear needs doing - great service.

Amazing tyres, don't last an awful length - say 5-7 k I guess but not bad, best thing is the heat they give off, when raining/cold days you can actually see the steam coming off them when u stop. lovely. bugs

  10. Cheers guys, booked in to have them fitted on Saturday morning. The Scorpions weren't bad in the dry but they were shite in the wet. Not that bothered about massive miles, read reviews and had your feedback so the SportSmarts it is.

  11. To be clear its the "Dunlop Sportmax Sportsmarts" you want (not the roadsmarts or any kind of other smarts...)

  12. Yes it's the Dunlop Sportmax SportSmarts I've gone for, getting them fitted Saturday morning.

  13. I had the RoadSmart II's on my Tuono. My ability would let go before the tyre ever would. All I ever needed for the road.

  14. on my second set , love em brilliant

  15. Got the new SportSmarts fitted by M&S Motorcycles in Newcastle on Saturday morning, my friend also had his new Hypermotard SP re shod with the very same tyres after wearing out his Supercorsas.

First impressions after just a few miles were very good, bike sits higher (i'm now on my tip toes) and ride feels more complient than on the Scorpions, suspension doesn't seem to crash over bumps and holes.

After the 50 to 70 miles of dry warm country lanes speeds increased to the point were the Scorpions would start to move around, the Dunlops remain solid, edge grip is impressive compared to the Scorpions.

I got to the point on local country lanes were I was taking liberties with the throttle and running a lot faster into, through and out of corners than I ever felt comfortable with on the Scorpions.

My friend on the Hyper SP also loves them, his last Hyper S was shod with them.

When the wifes Monster 796 needs tyres it will be getting these tyres.

These tyres IMHO are far better than the Scorpions, which were not a bad tyre in the dry(but crap in the wet), but these IMHO are in a different league.

Lets see how they last and what they are like in the wet.

These are my own opinions and feelings and i'm sure everyone has their favourites.

    Cheers

    Stu

  16. I fitted a set on Angel GT's to my Multi last week and spent yesterday putting 350 miles on them around Wales.

Very impressed so far ( but then new tyres nearly always are) and i'm hoping they last longer than the Scorpions which didn't even make 3000 miles before there was no visible tread in places. I don't mid buying one set of tyres a season but having to buy two sets is pushing it a bit.

  17. ...and when you're done with them Stu, come over to the dark side; the world of PR3's. Don't worry about the looks, feel the width...I mean the grip :))

  18. Hi Stu, interestingly same setting here ( me on Multi, missus on Monster 796). We are both running on Roadsmarts 2 now, mainly for long-distance touring. Different feel from Sportsmarts, less feedback but still a lot of grip if you "trust" them, they get to temperature much earlier, very good in the wet.

Here are the bikes somewhere in France last year:

  19. Had mine from new so had the Scorps, then Sportsmarts, now on PR3's.

My next set of tyres will be Sportsmarts. I may be going against the grain with all the PR3 lovers but I just prefer the feel and feedback of the Sportsmarts by quite a margin despite the fact that the PR3's last longer.

  20. i got 3,500 out of the Scorps. PR3s still looking good after 4,500. I rest my case. Who gives a 4x what they look like when the grip that well and last that long? I don't focus on the tyres when I'm doing 130+ for some reason ... PR3s are great tyres. That's the constructive bit!
