Hi Folks. Myself on 848 and a buddy here ( rdryder on 1098 ) are doing a Cartagena trackday next March in Spain. Let me say its more of a traning session over the 3 days so we're not out to beat lap times. All about body position, gearing, control etc, cornering... Whats the deal with buying part worn tyres, they can be trusted enough ? Just curious to know what part worn tyres we should buy ? tks
There are a few ebay sellers who trade in part worns and chances are you wont go far wrong as they turn them over quickly so you know that they wont be 5 year old. I was in need of a rear but as its end of season I didn't want to buy a new tyre £30 got me a scrubbed Power one However would I want to ruin a Euro track day because you went cheap on tyres. I'd be buying new
Mr C's advice is spot on, its a way to travel if the most important thing keeping you upright is not tip top. Having said that you could if needed source replacements there I guess, but you would pay through the nose for em..... I would go new too...... You could always take a couple of sets of part worn's as spares?
make sure the seller gives you the tread depths. some can be extremely worn on the righthand side! check pics for signs of tearing. best bet is to buy the tyres from somewhere you can actually see them - dealer who sponsors a racer, scrubs always for sale at trackdays either from the guys there or the tyre support people. also club races if you can get to any will have them for sale in the paddock. pirelli supercorsa or metzeler racetecs are your best bet - both can be reversed if one side is worse than the other (only in dry though) you will also need to take some wets (or be prepared to buy new ones when you are there) - it's not always sunny in spain!!
Its the end of the racing season so there will be quite a few sets of scrubs about, I always use scrubs for trackday tyres. Normally Metzeller Racetec Interact (K1 front K2 rear) or Pirelli Supercorsa (SC1 front SC2 Rear). Keep an eye on places like Trackday Riders for scrubs rather than Ebay, you will normally get a better deal
Tks for all the info folks. Much appreciated. I never would have thought to the Metz to be honest. ( have Metz exp's on the 1200 tenere and theyre great, even when ragging it in the twisties ).
Course it is.... Anyway, it falls mainly on the plain. Now here's a debatable question:- Some say its a no no to turn tyres. Its not something I've done but I do look longingly at all that meaty rubber still left on the one side of my rear tyre as I lob it in a skip. Some say if you turn it it may de laminate. Is this legit info or pure shite?
Some good advice here. The 848 cup boys use Pirelli supercorsa pros in SC2 compound usually, metzeler racetech K2 compound are very similar. Personally I would treat myself to a set of new tyres. last year on my 749 a pair of supercorsas sc2 rear sc1 front lasted the 3 days at Cartagena no problem. The fact that you know the tyres are in the best possible condition is worth a lot in confidence and enjoyment over the 3 days, and an extra £200 when you are already going to be spending £800-900 isn't so much. Or what about slicks? Pirelli superbike pros are cheaper than treaded track tyres. Pirelli, A&R Racing Services .
you need to be pushing on a bit to use slicks as they have no tread and the rubber doesn't move about so much to generate heat!! if you are only "training" you will need treaded tyres.
Fair comments. Though nodern slicks aren't massively different to a set of supercorsas or racetechs, in my experience.
I'll be doing the same. Got slicks on now, probably last a day and will get a set of scrubs for the other two days. Not like I'm racing or riding at 10/10ths so sure part worns will be fine...save the money for beer
Nice to see all the different opinions. I only fitted T30's so I will get another pair of new tyres for the 3 days. I wouldnt be "slow" but not a track fiend either. It will be my first time on track but did enjoy the Nurburgring a couple of yrs ago when I done it on the fireblade. I will probably do with Bridgestone S20's. Undecided yet to be honest.
Can't beat super corsa IMHO if you want tyres you can use after. Get road not rave rubber then warmers aren't so important
Yeah bradders, not gonna bother with pure track tyres. It would be nice to get a little mileage outta them after the few days. Re the supercorsa, there are SP & SC - Which ones are better ?
Right....Im gonna leave the T30's on and try not to knock up too much mileage. Only about 600 mls on them...i reckon I will do at least another 600 before march, defo. They will have tyres there so if I need I can buy a new set or else upgrade to more sticky rubber.
