848 / 1098 Part worn track tyres

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by Dubs, Oct 7, 2013.

  1. If you want tyres there you will have to pre order them before you go out there, the tyre supplier will not take many (if any) spare sets over and above those that are pre ordered out with them due to the space they take up.

  2. If you know where the part worns are from, I can't see any problem at all. Most racers will use a set per session, maybe 2 at the most so there's usually plenty of life left in them.

The reason they discard (sell) them is because they're fighting for 10ths of a second per lap but for a track day you really wouldn't notice much of a difference (unless you're really pushing to the limit).

I'd get 3 track days out of a set of new tyres (so that's about 300 miles). You'd probably get the same out of a set of part worns that have only done 50 hard miles.

Just buy them from a source you trust, ideally off someone you know who races and changes tyres after each session or 2.

  3. tks Kenoir.....again another fair point. I know a couple of guys who use tyres, but christ, these tyres look like theyve been blowtorched and dragged through a hedge.

Id prob be more comfortable in my head with a new set. I could throw the T30's back on when I got home.

All I have to do now is deicde if I want Michelin 2ct's, Bridestone S20's or Pirelli Supercorsa's..

  4. or Metzeler Racetec Interacts

  5. I have EXP's on the 1200 tenere, they are uber grippy...you can lob the thing on its side, very stabe on a big bike.

Re the interacts, all reviews say you could rip through them in a day ( are they that soft ). I wont be chasing times but interested to hear what you think ? :upyeah:

  6. Ignore the Pirelli Metzeller fanboys, Power one cups all the way dude

  7. EXP are touring tyres. Suitable for novice group I would expect. thought not really for pushing on a bit.

  8. I did a day at cadwell then 3 at portimao on a set of k1 front k2 rear scrubs (bought from a friend who races for £50) on a gsxr600. Ok I'm not the fastest rider in the world but I was pretty impressed by their life.

EDIT: actually thinking about it I was on wets for about 2 sessions a day at Portimao and the rear was pretty shot by the end of the trip, however a set of decent scrubs with a spare rear just in case would do me fine for a 4 day euro trip

  9. Someone else said that to me, but theyre a little soft ( wear quickly ). I need em for 21 sessions over 3 days.

I wouldnt use them on the track, just making reference that Metzer traillie tyres are great so I could only imagine how good their race tyre is. :upyeah:

I wouldnt be the fastest myself but can push on when mood takes me....interesting re the useage you got outta them :upyeah:

  10. Reanult good great F1 cars, the clio is a POS though

  11. :upyeah:

Bridgestone s20's or else Pirelli SP's it is.

  12. A new pair of Pirelli SC2 will be fine for a three day event if you aren't pushing on. Day one will be all about finding your way which then leaves two days to get the most from them. Always use them myself and used to pick up race scrubs from the 848 lads when I was involved and they were just fine.

  13. Tks Jason....

Im gonna go with the S20's.

I will do a full report when we get back. :upyeah:
