Jesus H Christ . It's as if they weren't satisfied with a single sided swingarm - now they've gone and done a single sided front end. One fork leg. Wicked
The 'R' model has always been the top dog model and the one to buy for future prosperity if you're lucky enough to be able to fork out the extra ££'s, so if I'd bought an 1199R for knocking on £27K I'd be pretty pissed off and feel a bit cheated when they wheeled out the Superleggera . However I'm sure Ducati will px an 1199R for a Superleggera for £10k less than you paid for it.
Ducati have been doing this for years and getting away with it. Only because their bikes won races and most importantly championships. The 1199 hasn't won anything. Yet. So I cannot see how they can justify high prices when the bike is clearly inferior to the other marques. Relying on the badge is a dangerous strategy. I know 2 others who've moved away to BMW. I will be replacing my 1198 next spring and I will be following suit. They're losing customers because they've severely overpriced their bikes. You cannot rely upon loyalty as a marketing strategy when your flagship bike is pooh.
Its a valid statement above and I think the 848 & 899 are overpriced. They are 15.5k euro here for the 848 evo and the 899 will be appx 16k euro. Its a lot. You'd get a new fireblade out of the crate for 15k easy. Its a toigh one. But then Sam, you could have the same arguement re the fireblade, it hasnt really been doing the business, neither has the bmw but would they be classed of overpriced ? What ya reckon ?
The BMW is new to superbikes and has done well considering. Especially my mate who creams me bloody well everywhere. Plus he got TC, QS etc long before Ducati felt they should give it to the masses instead of only on the S or SP. The BMW is priced right. The Ducati should be about the same price. If Ducati could match the build quality of a honda then maybe, but say what you will about the blade. Its a very well put together bike and it has won a thing or two. Not my cup of tea perhaps but its a legend. Oh and its cheaper than a ducati. When I trade in my 1198 it may well be the S1000 or an R1. After all I still have my 916. I'd like another duke but I cannot pay more than I think something is worth unless its drop dead gorgeous or winning championships. That said I am a sucker for the red bikes. If only the 1199 was pretty...The front is okay, from the side it looks odd. The rear aint too bad. Plus I miss the trellis frame. I liked that about ducati. Sticking to their tradition. Make the Pani look like my 916 and you would have to prize me from the local dealers door. I would be kicking the door down with my visa clenched between my teeth.
How can you compare Honda to a Ducati? And who cares if the bimmer is better and cheaper? Its not a Ducati, is it. If money were no object, i would have a Panigale for track and my Multi for the road. But its not, so I will stick with what I can afford: cheap ass missile which I can get ready supply of parts for at cheap price if needed. And the gixer ;-) lol
How can you compare Ducati to Honda when the latter is whipping its ass. And I mean whipping. I'm not committed exclusively to Ducati. Yes I like them but I also like Triumphs, BMW's, GSXR's, R1's. Oh and I have a soft spot for Guzzi's. I am merely putting pressure on them. They understand this.
When work was good & before i broke my Back ! (not bike related) I went to BMW park ln & i bought a 8 month old S1000rr in motorsport colours. Cheeeper than i could buy in the midlands ! work that out ??? A fantastic bike fast as F..k & never missed a beat. The only thing i didnt like was the way the front always pawed the air & the TC pulled it back down again !!! Anyway couldnt fault it, But it just felt soul less .......
Ducati has fans. (We should know...) And some of those fans are rich. In fact, quite a lot of them are rich - judging by the prices of new Ducatis. Some of the rich fans are very rich. It won't be a problem to find 500 of them worldwide. Things like the Superleggera are not meant for most folks, in the same way that £500 bottles of whisky are not meant for most folks. These are products that are meant for people for whom the money is basically small change. If you can afford a Ferrari, you aren't going to be worried by the price of a Superleggera. The rich are getting richer and it is only sensible to market extremely expensive toys at them. If you are an R owner and need to have the top thing, then you'll chop it in and take the 10 grand hit. What's 10 grand? It's the little numbers on the end of your bonus. I'm not bitter about this at all. That is how the world is. I welcome the new super bike in the same way as I like to see a Lamborghini.
Its horses for courses and all that but having two friends with S1000's i can tell you the quality of the finish is poor and the neither has been a paragon of reliability with one friend now having been let down twice now in the middle of nowhere with electrical problems. I have no idea why some people choose to slate things simply because its expensive and they cannot afford it. You could make the same accusation at Porsche, Ferrari etc. Does anyone buy a 1199R or whatever simply because its the most expensive Ducati or do they buy it because they can afford it and they like it? And WSBk racing ( which incidentally BMW will no longer be competing in next year) is nothing like the bike you can buy in the showroom.
I had an S1000RR on a demo last year for 2 days in total. It was fast as fook buuut about as fun and engaging to ride as driving a Vauxhall Vectra would be. So to sum up very good at being fast and that's about it. I took it back early on the 2nd day feeling very underwhelmed. My 999 does turn heads and gets admiring glances, but the Beemer got about as much interest as a fridge freezer. I felt like Mr invisible.
I kid you not, I do not see the point of this super-leggy-patrica if it cant win races. I spoke to someone this morning who has seen and ( not here in IE ), he said words couldnt describe how good it looked. I asked him was it for WSBK, he said he couldn t say as they were sworn to secrecy but did they that Ducati have a lot going on at the moment.
any bike that pushes the envelope is good..as it drives others to better it. if it wins great the fact its being built is good for motorcycling
