Best Bikes to buy as Investments?

  1. My bad wasn't a pleonasm either as you used less words.

  2. no, his horror is genuine..he even emailed me about it.

  3. It's very difficult to "know" what will appreciate in value. You can only have a best guess. If you have ever tried to buy stocks and shares, you will know that your best guess is often wrong.

Cult bikes that are limited in supply seem likely to appreciate. Taking a punt on things that people currently have little interest in but you reckon they will have an interest in in the future is more problematic, but if you get it right, you will likely make more money.

  4. Vintage Fenders are more interesting!!

  5. As you say the sp3 is rare, so it will therefore fetch a higher price. The point I am making is that you will have missed the boat as far as buying a bargin that will greatly appreciate in years to come.

  6. a standard low miles sp1.

did I mention working for a lady and found she has a brough superior ss80 in her garage?

  7. just had a look on fleabay for rg 250's there is some cheap bikes that look easy restoration projects and a lovely one in the old Barry Sheene colours you can double your money quickly on them

  8. ....SP2 honda...white/red/silver 2003....I love my Ducati's and will never change back but do wish I still had my sp2 it was special! there is one in Bridge Garage Exeter unregistered owned by the dealer, apparently he turned down 25K to sell recently!

  9. So Fizzys and Kwak Zeds have been making silly money - what about AR50s and 80s or Kwak GPZs over the next few years?

  10. Thinking of road registering it so can go to the local cafe & upset people ! its proper LOUD

  11. Or a 50s Les Paul?

If you could ever afford one, doubt you'd ever lose any money on it.

It seems that as bits of bike wear out with age, even if you aren't using it, guitars actually get better with age.

    Result!

  12. Vincent Black Shadow - Panther Sloper 600

  13. '98 R1 is the obvious choice.

    '97 TL1000S

    ZXR750 H1

    Any slabby GSXR

    T509 Speed Triple

    Ducati Indiana...

  14. GPZs don't seem to be doing much at all, apart from the GPZ900, and even they haven't realised classic status yet. Maybe that's the one to go for. For mopeds you'd be better off going for a Suzuki AP50 than an AR50, but if it's Kwaks you like, the KMX200 could be worth a punt if you can find one that hasn't been smashed to bits. For me, I'd be tempted to pick up an early ZZR1100 for £500 and stick it in the back of the garage for ten years...

  15. Even though that SPA is very expensive, if I had the cash I'd buy it without hesitation or regret. Not bothered about the foggy one.

  16. He takes the piss with some of his prices, and he's actually the same guy in sheffield mentioned in the earlier part of the thread.

Essentially though he's done what a lot of collectors do - limited runs and special models, or stuff which has cult status at the present time - buy lots of them, park them in storage for ten/twenty years and then punt them onto the market with delivery mileage. I was speaking to a guy at aston and he regularly sells cars in batches of eight to ten to the same customer collector/investors.

I regards to getting used / not used, if the vehicle is original and scarce enough desirability and obtainability take precedence over what state it's in. lets face it, an old dog RC30 will always sell for the wrong side of ten grand, and a mint one will always sell for a good fifteen upwards even if its done 30000 miles.

Look at 888's a clean sp4 or 5 will sell for 15k up all day long - with 20,000+ miles on the clock - so the bloke who bought it for 15k rode it for 15k and now have his cake and eat it. In the case of the sheffield guy, he can stick whatever price he wants on them, especially that 955, which in reality is a bargain considering cost new and how few of them there were.

lets take 916's - everyone and their mum had one, especially when parallel imports started coming in. Everyone and their mum started to track them and bits for them on fleabay were cheap as chips, because of that, more have ended up in breakers and so what do you know - original 916's and their sp derivatives are hens teeth.

But we're digressing from Dave's original question,

Dave, depends mate really. if you got the capital stuff that costs now or is limited will always be worth money once it becomes a bit scarce - RC30's, 45's. NR750 would still be a curio though I would think as to have value even perceived there has to be a grain of nostalgic popularity or iconic fervour - I give you the Mclaren F1 and the F40 as a prime example.

Anything that's a race bike or vehicle needs to have provenance (race win papers, factory team provenance etc) to have any real value, otherwise it becomes really just an assembled collection of hard to find parts - a 916 corsa bought and run by sprogget and sylvester racing (where you don't know what was changed / modified / etc) is worth way less than the 916 corsa ridden to victory by foggy for example- not that it'll be worthless but you get the idea.

R7's, OW01's, RC30, even stuff like the zx7R-R or the YZF750R-SP might be worth looking at as they were expensive rarely bought options on very popular mainstream commercial successes. Again, you're looking at something which was a limited run or availability, just look at GSXR750R - pant wetting rarity! - oh and home market only limited runs as well!

All the options I would have said have already been said, and they're not necessarily the obvious exotica like the serie oro, like I say, think back to the 916 - couldn't move for the fuckers, between modding / specialling and trackbiking ...

  17. yes the 955 and Foggy rep have been advertised since forever...daft money. i wonder if the fact the foggy was such a bell end has adversely affected the value of the bikes?
